Yes. Connect the PS4’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI input on the monitor, select that input, then turn on the console. Picture and sound are separate: some monitors have no speakers or audio output, so check the monitor’s specifications before expecting to hear game audio through it.
Connect a PS4 to a monitor with HDMI
- Turn off or put the PS4 and monitor in standby before connecting.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the PS4’s HDMI OUT port to the monitor’s HDMI input. Sony documents this as the standard connection between a PS4 and a screen: PlayStation Support: Set up your PS4.
- Turn on the monitor and select the HDMI input you used.
- Turn on the PS4. If there is no picture, check that both cable ends are seated, the monitor is on the correct input, and the display accepts the PS4’s output signal.
Check the monitor’s manual or product specifications for built-in speakers, a headphone output, and supported input formats. Those features vary by model.

If the monitor has built-in speakers
Check the monitor’s volume and mute settings. Not every monitor includes speakers, so confirm this in the exact model’s specifications. LG notes that some monitors have no built-in speakers: LG Support: Connect an external speaker.
If the monitor has a headphone output
If the monitor receives audio over HDMI and has a headphone output, connect headphones or powered speakers to that jack. Verify that it is an audio output and that the monitor passes HDMI audio through to it; support varies by model. Samsung describes HDMI audio being passed to a 3.5 mm headphone jack on some monitors: Samsung Support: Connect headphones to a Samsung monitor.

Use headphones connected to the controller
Connect a compatible headset to the controller, then on the PS4 open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones. The default is Chat Audio; choose the available setting that suits what you want to hear. Sony says compatible headsets can receive all audio or chat audio: PlayStation Support: Change audio output on PS4.
Use optical audio only if your console and audio device support it
Some PS4 revisions have an optical digital output, but Sony says the CUH-2000 series does not. Check the console model and the audio device’s inputs before relying on an optical connection. Sony’s audio-output guide lists this model limitation.

Connect a PS4 to a VGA-only monitor
The PS4 outputs video over HDMI, so a monitor with only VGA needs an HDMI-source-to-VGA-display converter. VGA does not carry audio, and ASUS notes that audio is discarded when HDMI is converted to VGA: ASUS Support: No audio output from a monitor using HDMI to VGA.
Before choosing a converter, check its direction, whether it needs USB power, supported resolution, HDCP compatibility, and whether it has a separate audio output. You will need a separate audio route if the converter and monitor do not provide one. Do not assume HDMI-to-DVI will send audio to a monitor’s headphone jack; Samsung notes that this connection does not carry audio to that output.

Check HDCP if the screen stays blank
Sony says HDCP is enabled by default on PS4 HDMI output and that an incompatible connected device can prevent both video and audio output. The setting is at Settings > System > Enable HDCP. Sony permits disabling HDCP for gameplay, but Blu-ray, DVD, and DRM-protected streaming playback require it enabled. It is therefore not a universal fix for a blank display: PlayStation Support: Change audio output on PS4.

For PS4 HDR, Sony specifies a Premium HDMI cable, a display capable of 2K or 4K HDR10, HDR-capable content, and PS4 system software 7.0 or later. Set the console’s HDR and Deep Colour output options to Automatic. Sony’s HDR setup guidance describes a direct connection and says not to route the console through a receiver or switch box for this setup: PlayStation Support: Set up HDR on PS4.
