Usually, yes—but only if the cable’s console-end connector matches the PS5, the cable is undamaged and properly rated, and its wall plug suits your location. Most standard PS4 and PS4 Slim cords are likely to fit. Some early PS4 Pro cords use a larger connector and will not fit a PS5’s smaller figure-eight-style inlet. Sony’s safety guide says to use the AC cord supplied with the console, so a cross-console swap is a practical compatibility judgment, not an official Sony endorsement.
Check the connector before using the cable
Look at the cable end that plugs into the console, not just the product name or the device it came with. The PS5 inlet is a small, two-opening figure-eight style. A matching plug should slide in smoothly and sit firmly; do not force, angle, or wiggle it into place.
- Small figure-eight plug: commonly identified as IEC C7; likely the correct physical type when it matches the PS5 inlet.
- Larger three-hole computer-style plug: associated with C13/C17-style cable assemblies; it will not fit a PS5 inlet designed for the smaller connector.
Connector terminology is described in the IEC 60320 overview. Sony’s PS4 model and port guide identifies multiple PS4 families, but its public materials do not consistently name the cord connector using C7 or C13 terminology.
The PS4 Pro exception
“PS4 Pro” alone does not tell you whether its cord will fit. Early PS4 Pro revisions, commonly CUH-70xx and CUH-71xx, are associated with a larger C13/C17-style connection. Some later CUH-72xx units use the smaller figure-eight-style connection. Treat these model associations as a useful identification convention, not a complete Sony compatibility table: inspect the actual plug and PS5 inlet.

Sony lists maximum power consumption of 165 W for the PS4 CUH-2000 series and 310 W for the PS4 Pro in its PS4 technical specifications. Those figures do not by themselves establish whether a particular cord is suitable; connector fit, cable condition, markings, and regional plug all matter.
What the power specifications do—and do not—tell you
Sony lists the PS4 CUH-2000 series as AC 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz, with maximum consumption of 165 W, and the PS4 Pro at up to 310 W. These PS4 figures do not establish the rating of an individual cable, and they should not be used to infer a universal amperage requirement for a replacement. Check the markings on the cord and choose one intended for mains use with a suitable rating.

PS5 models and revisions can have different documentation. Check the manual for the exact console rather than applying one model’s specifications to every PS5. Sony’s manuals index lists guides for PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS5 families. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide instructs users to use the supplied AC power cord and warns against damaged cords, voltage transformers, and inverters. A cord that physically fits is not therefore certified by Sony for every console model.
How to check and connect a spare cord safely
- Turn the PS5 fully off. Press the PS button, open the power menu, and select Turn Off PS5. Wait until the indicator is completely off before unplugging. Sony warns that disconnecting AC power while the indicator is lit or blinking can cause data loss, corruption, or console damage; see its power-saving guidance.
- Compare the plugs and inlet. Check the rear AC input and the cord’s console end. Use the cord only if the shapes match exactly. If uncertain, consult the exact model’s manual.
- Check the wall end and cord markings. The wall plug must suit your country and outlet. Check that the cable is intended for mains power and has appropriate electrical markings; a dual-voltage console does not make every imported cable or plug automatically suitable.
- Inspect the whole cord. Do not use it if insulation is frayed, crushed, exposed, taped, cracked, discolored, or burned, or if contacts are bent or loose. Sony’s safety guide says to inspect the AC cord and stop using it if damaged.
- Insert without force. The connection should be secure, with no looseness or exposed metal. Do not use an adapter to make a different console-end connector fit, remove a grounding pin, or modify either plug.
- Test while watching for warning signs. Connect to a suitable outlet or properly rated surge protector, then turn on the PS5. Stop using the cord if you notice crackling, a burning smell, unusual heat, intermittent power, arcing, or repeated shutdowns.

When to use another cord or get help
Use the original PS5 cord if it is available and in good condition. If it is not, choose a reputable replacement with the confirmed connector, appropriate electrical markings, and the correct regional wall plug. A generic listing that claims compatibility with “all PlayStation consoles” is not enough: check the actual connector and cable details. Avoid unmarked or suspiciously cheap cords.

Replace rather than reuse a cord that is worn, loose, intermittently powered, from an unknown source, or fitted with a wall plug for another region. Do not use a laptop charger, USB cable, HDMI cable, or proprietary low-voltage adapter in place of an AC mains cord. Sony warns against voltage transformers and inverters for PS5 use in its Safety Guide.
If the cable fits but the PS5 will not turn on
- Check the outlet with another known-good device.
- If a surge protector may be faulty, test a suitable wall outlet instead.
- Make sure the connector is fully seated; if available, try the original PS5 cord.
- Stop if there is a burning smell, clicking, visible damage, or unusual heat. Do not keep cycling power.
- If the problem persists, contact PlayStation Hardware and Repairs.
Intermittent power is a failure, not an acceptable fit. Stop using the cord and inspect the console’s AC inlet for damage; seek service if the fault remains.

Do PS4 and PS5 power cords count as the same cable?
Not universally. The detachable cord is a mains cable rather than a console-specific voltage converter, but connector revisions and regional wall plugs differ. The useful test is whether the console-end plug matches the PS5 inlet and the cord is appropriate, undamaged, and secure—not whether its label says PS4, PS5, monitor, or computer.
