The GTX 1080 was scheduled to arrive May 27, with launch pricing starting at $599 for partner cards and $699 for NVIDIA’s Founders Edition. The GTX 1070 followed on June 10, at $379 for partner cards or $449 for the Founders Edition. The flagship promised a major jump in performance and efficiency; the lower-priced GTX 1070 made the new generation’s value case.
What NVIDIA announced on May 6
At a presentation led by CEO Jensen Huang, NVIDIA brought its Pascal architecture to gaming PCs with the GTX 1080, then previewed the GTX 1070 as a less expensive follow-up. The May 6 event was chiefly a GTX 1080 reveal: NVIDIA gave the GTX 1070 a date and initial positioning, while its fuller launch announcement came later. The GTX 1080 went on sale May 27, 2016; the GTX 1070 launched June 10. NVIDIA’s announcement coverage and newsroom announcement record the reveal and pricing.
The relevant high-end comparisons were the Maxwell-generation GTX 980 Ti and Titan X. NVIDIA presented Pascal as a substantial advance over Maxwell in performance per watt as well as outright speed. Its significance was not simply a smaller manufacturing process: the new process, architectural changes, higher clocks, memory technology, compression, and software features all contributed.
Why Pascal mattered
GP104 and 16nm FinFET
The GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 used GP104, a gaming-focused Pascal GPU built on a 16nm FinFET process. That was a major process shrink from the 28nm process used by the GTX 980 generation. Pascal was a family of designs, not one identical chip: the gaming cards’ GP104 differed from the larger GP100 design aimed at high-performance computing and AI workloads.

The combination enabled higher clock speeds while keeping the GTX 1080’s rated board power at 180W. NVIDIA also described fourth-generation memory compression, which was intended to make more effective use of available memory bandwidth; it did not change the cards’ physical memory-bus width or raw bandwidth figures.
GPU Boost 3.0
GPU Boost 3.0 allowed more granular voltage-and-frequency tuning than GPU Boost 2.0, including clock offsets at different voltage points. The practical result depended on the individual card, cooling, power limits, and workload; it was a control and boost mechanism, not a fixed clock guarantee.

GDDR5X gave the GTX 1080 higher raw memory bandwidth than the GTX 1070’s GDDR5, while both cards retained 8GB of capacity. Bandwidth and capacity are different measures: faster memory can move data more quickly, but it does not provide more space for textures or other data.

NVIDIA said the GTX 1080 could outperform the GTX 980 Ti and Titan X in gaming. In its own benchmark suite, it claimed an average improvement of 69% over the GTX 980, with results as high as 88%; it also advertised up to three times the GTX 980’s performance in selected VR workloads and up to twice the Titan X’s speed in a specific VR demonstration. These were NVIDIA results for particular games and demonstrations, not universal multipliers across all titles or settings.
GeForce GTX 1070: a lower-cost Pascal card
The GTX 1070 retained Pascal and an 8GB framebuffer but used standard GDDR5 memory rather than the GTX 1080’s GDDR5X. NVIDIA positioned it as offering Titan X-class performance at a much lower price. That was the company’s positioning, not a promise of identical results in every game or application. NVIDIA’s GTX 1070 launch announcement gives its launch timing, memory, and pricing.
The card’s appeal was not just that it was a slower GTX 1080: it brought the generation’s major feature set and 8GB capacity to a substantially lower starting price, with reduced GPU and memory throughput compared with the flagship.
GTX 1080 versus GTX 1070
| At launch | GeForce GTX 1080 | GeForce GTX 1070 |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Pascal flagship | Lower-priced high-end card |
| Memory | 8GB GDDR5X | 8GB GDDR5 |
| Partner-card starting price | $599 | $379 |
| Founders Edition price | $699 | $449 |
| Launch date | May 27, 2016 | June 10, 2016 |
For a 2016 buyer seeking the highest single-GPU performance, the GTX 1080 was the clear flagship. The GTX 1070 offered a more accessible route to high-end Pascal gaming and the same 8GB capacity, trading away some processing and memory throughput. The actual performance gap varied by game, resolution, driver, and board model; a single percentage would obscure those conditions.

What the Founders Edition price meant
NVIDIA quoted two launch prices for each card. The GTX 1080’s advertised partner-card starting price was $599, while NVIDIA’s Founders Edition cost $699. For the GTX 1070, those figures were $379 and $449 respectively. “Founders Edition” was the name for NVIDIA’s own premium reference-style cards, not a different GPU architecture or the only official version. The price difference was a central launch issue because the premium model could be mistaken for the sole or standard price.
The GTX 1080 Founders Edition featured a vapor-chamber cooler, fan-and-shroud design, and backplate. Its blower-style exhaust could suit some case layouts, while partner cards offered different cooling designs, acoustics, factory clocks, and prices. The Founders Edition’s construction did not make it automatically the best choice for every system. NVIDIA’s Founders Edition description details the design and availability model.

Simultaneous Multi-Projection
Simultaneous Multi-Projection let supported rendering workloads produce multiple projections from geometry more efficiently. NVIDIA highlighted potential uses in VR, multi-monitor gaming, and unusual viewports. It was not a blanket frame-rate boost: gains depended on software support and whether a title used the technique.
VRWorks and Ansel
VRWorks grouped NVIDIA technologies intended to improve VR rendering efficiency, latency, and image quality. Hardware capability alone did not ensure a benefit; a VR application needed to use the relevant features. Ansel was NVIDIA’s in-game screenshot and photo-mode technology, enabling supported games to capture customized viewpoints and images. It required game integration rather than working automatically in every title.

HDR, DirectX 12, and Vulkan
NVIDIA promoted HDR gaming and video capabilities, including 4K Netflix playback. Actual HDR or protected 4K video playback depended on the display and the rest of the playback chain, including operating system, application, and copy-protection requirements. Likewise, DirectX 12 and Vulkan support gave developers APIs to target, but did not guarantee that every game using either API would run faster.
High Bandwidth SLI
NVIDIA introduced a High Bandwidth SLI Bridge for Pascal. It said the new bridge ran at 650MHz, compared with 400MHz for older bridges, and that the GTX 1080 used both SLI interface connectors. Older bridges remained usable, though NVIDIA warned that their lower bandwidth could affect performance or smoothness in some cases. Multi-GPU scaling still depended on game support, so a second card was not a guaranteed upgrade.
What launch reviews established
Independent launch testing broadly confirmed the GTX 1080 as the fastest single-GPU gaming card available at the time. PC Gamer’s launch review praised its performance, efficiency, and features, while criticizing Founders Edition pricing and noting limited initial stock. That independent result supports the flagship conclusion; it does not turn NVIDIA’s selected benchmark figures into universal performance claims.
Historically, the GTX 1080 demonstrated Pascal’s top-end performance, while the GTX 1070 made the generation’s proposition more consequential for buyers unwilling to pay flagship pricing. The launch story is therefore both an architecture shift and a pricing split: a premium showcase card alongside a markedly cheaper high-end alternative.
