Start by checking Epic Games Status and your internet provider’s outage notices. If Fortnite services are down or under maintenance, wait and retry; changing router settings will not fix a server-side problem. If services are healthy, use the error message and platform-specific checks below to narrow down the cause.
First, check whether the problem is Epic’s servers or your connection
Matchmaking and ESP errors can result from an Epic service issue, an ISP outage or routing problem, congestion or weak Wi-Fi at home, security software or a proxy, or platform and device settings. Check Epic Games Status and your ISP’s outage or degradation notices before changing anything. Console players should check both.
If a relevant Epic service is down or maintenance is underway, wait for recovery and try again. If Fortnite services are up, restart the game and continue with the checks for your error and platform. For Live Event access problems, use Epic’s separate Live Event guidance.
What Fortnite matchmaking errors #1, #2, and #3 mean
Epic says these errors are mainly associated with server maintenance or a network connection issue. The wording can help identify the reported symptom, but it does not by itself prove that your home network is at fault.

- Matchmaking Error #1: “Weird. We couldn’t connect to the match. You can try again, but if the problem continues, check our status page.”
- Matchmaking Error #2: “We had trouble connecting to content beacon service. Give it another shot, if the problem continues, check our status page.” An error #2 variant may instead say you lack permission for content. That can reflect a tournament requirement or eligibility issue, not a connection fault.
- Matchmaking Error #3: “Looks like all the Battle Buses headed out are full. Give it another shot in a few minutes, if it keeps up, visit our status page.”
Check service status first. If services are healthy, follow the connection steps below; if the error keeps returning, submit a Fortnite bug report.
What to do about Matchmaking Error #5 or #7
Epic says Matchmaking Error #5 appears when Fortnite cannot connect you to a match and is usually caused by a server issue or a network connection problem. Check Epic Games Status, restart Fortnite, and then follow the connection checks in this guide if services are up.

Epic’s support article titled for errors #5 and #7 explains #5 but does not separately define #7. The cause of #5 should not be assumed to explain every #7 occurrence; check status and use the exact message when contacting support.
How to troubleshoot ESP-DIST-001 and other ESP errors
Epic describes ESP errors as usually connection-related. Its current support instructions, checked October 3, 2026, recommend starting with service status and basic connection checks rather than assuming one cause.

- Check Epic Games Status. If services are healthy, restart Fortnite, then restart your modem and router and the affected computer or console.
- Temporarily turn off nearby Bluetooth devices and retry. Test a different connection, such as a mobile hotspot. If Fortnite works on the alternate connection, that points toward your usual network; contact your ISP with the details.
- If you use a VPN or proxy, disable it for a test. Check firewall or security software for whether it is blocking Fortnite or the Epic Games Launcher. Do not leave protection disabled broadly; follow the product’s or Epic’s instructions for a targeted check.
- On PC, follow Epic’s instructions for your operating system to clear the launcher cache or check DNS and required network domains. Background apps and an incorrect device clock can also be relevant to connection troubleshooting.
Some instructions apply only to particular setups. Epic has a Bitdefender-specific procedure for ESP-DIST-001 and a Nintendo Switch MTU procedure; use those only if you have that security product or platform, and follow the linked steps rather than applying them to all devices: Epic’s ESP-DIST-001 troubleshooting.
Fix “Connection to the Content Distribution Network failed! Curl Code: 7!”
Epic treats this generic network message as a connection issue and directs players to its general connection troubleshooting. Check service status, restart the game and network equipment, and then follow the steps for your platform. On PC, review the VPN or proxy, firewall or security software, launcher cache, DNS, background apps, device clock, and required network domains. Avoid changing several settings at once: test after each targeted change so you can identify what mattered.

Run your console’s network test
After checking Epic and ISP outages, use the built-in network test or current network-support steps for your console. Epic directs players to the platform makers’ instructions:
- Xbox connection troubleshooting. If Xbox displays “Error Connecting to Epic Services Queue,” Epic directs players to Microsoft Support.
- PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 connection troubleshooting.
- Nintendo Switch connection troubleshooting.
Diagnose high ping and packet loss
Use Fortnite’s network details while you are experiencing the problem. In the lobby, open Settings → Game UI, turn Net Debug Stats on, and select Apply. The figures appear in the upper-left corner. A repeated “Disabled” display by itself does not affect gameplay.

Read ping, packet loss, and jitter together. Ping is the time, in milliseconds, for data to travel from your device to the game server and back. Congestion, routing, and the match server can all affect it. Jitter is variation in latency; compare the minimum and maximum readings. Epic’s guidance says packet loss should be 0%; loss that consistently exceeds about 1% can cause in-game problems even when average ping appears low.
To compare with an Epic endpoint, run the relevant test while the issue is occurring if possible. Epic’s sample commands send 50 ICMP pings; the endpoint hostname shown is for the Virginia subregion. On Windows 11, open Command Prompt and run:
ping ping-va.ds.on.epicgames.com -n 50On macOS, open Terminal and run:
ping -c 50 ping-va.ds.on.epicgames.comThese commands test ICMP traffic, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP. A normal endpoint test therefore does not rule out every problem on the gameplay path. Compare the command’s results with in-game ping, loss, and jitter rather than treating one test as conclusive. For another subregion, use the endpoint listed in Epic’s ping instructions.

When to contact your ISP, Epic, or platform support
- Contact your ISP if the problem persists on your usual connection but not an alternate one, or if endpoint and in-game readings point to persistent latency or loss. Give them the tested host, command results, in-game ping/loss/jitter, and the times you tested. Restarting equipment and trying Ethernet, where practical, can help separate local Wi-Fi trouble from a wider connection issue.
- Contact Epic Support if services appear healthy and platform/network checks do not resolve a recurring Fortnite-specific error. Include the exact error text, platform, when it happens, and relevant test results. Follow Epic’s current general connection troubleshooting steps; Epic also recommends contacting the hardware manufacturer after the listed connection steps.
- Contact platform support for console network-test failures or platform-specific service problems. For Xbox’s “Error Connecting to Epic Services Queue,” use Microsoft Support.
