Apex Legends is the best starting point if you want Fortnite’s squad-based last-team-standing action with faster movement and character abilities. For a more grounded shooter, try PUBG: Battlegrounds; for military-style combat and multiple battle royale modes, consider Call of Duty: Warzone. If you mainly want the elimination-party format without shooting, Fall Guys is a looser alternative.
None of these is a direct replacement for Fortnite’s building or presentation. Choose by the part you want to keep: squad tactics, weapon-focused combat, or simply the thrill of being the last player standing.
Which Fortnite alternative should you try?
| Game | Best fit | What changes from Fortnite |
|---|---|---|
| Apex Legends | Fast squad combat and character abilities | Hero abilities and rapid movement are central to its shooter feel. |
| PUBG: Battlegrounds | A more grounded shooter feel and weapon customization | It has a more mature tone and puts greater emphasis on weapons, according to GamesRadar+’s March 17, 2026 guide. |
| Call of Duty: Warzone | Military-style shooting and battle royale modes | It offers Battle Royale and Resurgence modes, with a military setting and weapon-and-attachment complexity. |
| Fall Guys | Casual, silly elimination-party play | Obstacle courses replace scavenging and shooting; it is a tonal alternative, not a close shooter match. |
Fortnite’s Battle Royale format combines survival, exploration, scavenging and last-person-standing play, with solo and squads of two to four. Epic’s Fortnite Battle Royale documentation describes that format. The alternatives below preserve some of that loop, but not all of its mechanics.
Best alternatives by the part of Fortnite you want to keep
Apex Legends: for fast squad fights and character abilities
Apex Legends is the clearest fit if you want a competitive squad shooter where movement and character abilities shape encounters. It also offers more than one way to play: EA describes Ranked as matching players around rank, Wildcard as a faster, more streamlined mode, Bot Royale Evolved as a mix of human players and bots, and Mixtape as a rotating set of modes. Mode names and rules can change; see EA’s Apex Legends mode guide for current descriptions.
#1 Best Overall
- Play as your favorite PlayStation characters with all their signature moves
- Dynamic environments straight from the characters' worlds
- Interactive mash-up events featuring additional PlayStation characters
- Local and Online tournament modes
- Never Stop Playing with Cross-Save and Cross-Play between the PS3 and PS Vita
EA lists Apex Legends as free to play on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, EA App and Steam for PC. Access requires an EA account and persistent internet; age restrictions and in-game purchases apply, and a platform account or subscription may also be required. Check the local store and device requirements before installing. EA’s FAQ has the platform and account details.
PUBG: Battlegrounds: for a more grounded shooter presentation
Choose PUBG: Battlegrounds if the shooting and weapon setup matter more to you than Fortnite’s playful tone. GamesRadar+’s March 17, 2026 editorial guide characterizes PUBG as having a more mature presentation and an emphasis on weapon customization. That is an editorial comparison, not a controlled feature or performance test, so treat it as a broad description of feel rather than a measured ranking.
Rank #2
Call of Duty: Warzone: for military-style combat
Warzone suits players who want military-themed shooting with battle royale options. Activision’s official page describes both Battle Royale and Resurgence and links to PC and console storefronts. The page also displayed a Season 04 label when reviewed; seasonal content is volatile, so check the live page for the current lineup rather than relying on that label. Visit the official Warzone page for its current mode and store information.
Fall Guys: for elimination without gunfights
Fall Guys keeps the contest-to-one-winner idea but changes the activity completely: players race through obstacle-course rounds rather than searching for weapons and fighting. Epic describes it as a cross-platform party royale in which contestants compete through obstacle courses until one victor remains. It is a good alternative if the light, social elimination format is what you enjoy, but not if you specifically want a shooter. Epic’s Fall Guys documentation explains the format.
Rank #3
- VIDEO GAME-INSPIRED BATTLE ROYALE: Experience an authentic battle royale setting in a board game format, inspired by popular video games.
- STRATEGIC OPEN-ENDED GAMEPLAY: Utilize a limited dice pool and character-specific abilities for actions like running, building, healing, looting, and combat.
- UNIQUE CHARACTERS AND MINIS: Select from charismatic characters, each with unique skills and represented by detailed miniatures.
- MODULAR ISLAND ADVENTURE: Parachute onto a modular island that changes with each game, offering new challenges and strategies.
- TOXIN-DRIVEN ACTION: As the game progresses, watch the map fill with toxin, forcing contestants closer and intensifying the gameplay.
How to choose the right one
- Want abilities and quick squad skirmishes? Start with Apex Legends.
- Prefer a more grounded, weapon-focused feel? Try PUBG: Battlegrounds.
- Want a military setting and more than one battle royale mode? Look at Warzone.
- Want last-contestant-standing fun without shooting? Pick Fall Guys.
- Need to play on a particular device or in a particular region? Confirm local store availability and account or subscription requirements before choosing.
Similarity is about more than the genre label. Consider whether you want to play solo or with a squad, how much complexity you enjoy, and whether you want the pace and presentation of a shooter or the lighter feel of a party game. Availability, store listings and mode rosters can change.
