To connect a Wii Remote to a PC for Dolphin Emulator, start the connection from Dolphin—not from Windows Bluetooth settings. In Dolphin, set the Wii Remote slot to Real Wii Remote, select Refresh, then press 1 + 2 on the Remote together. For a -TR model, press its Sync button instead.
What you need before connecting
- A Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus, and a PC with Bluetooth. Many desktop PCs do not have Bluetooth built in; Dolphin says they may need a USB or PCIe Bluetooth adapter. No particular adapter model is established here as compatible.
- Dolphin Emulator, with the Wii Remote slot you plan to use available and not already claimed by another Remote.
- If the connection attempt fails, switch off any nearby Wii or Wii U console during the attempt so it does not interfere.
Connect the Wii Remote through Dolphin
- Open Dolphin and go to Controller Settings.
- For the Wii Remote slot you want to use, choose Real Wii Remote. Check that another Remote has not already claimed that slot.
- In the Wii Remote controls, select Refresh to start scanning.
- Press 1 + 2 on the Wii Remote at the same time. On a -TR Remote, press the Sync button instead. Keep a game running or the configuration window open while the connection is being made.
- Once connected, use the Remote in Dolphin. Dolphin says Continuous Scanning can allow later connections without reopening the Wii Remote window.
If the Remote disconnects after being idle, reconnect through Tools → Connect Wii Remotes or press a button on the Remote.
Why you should not pair it in Windows first
For Dolphin’s Real Wii Remote workflow, Dolphin advises against pairing through the operating system’s native Bluetooth settings. The OS can interfere with Dolphin’s connection. If Windows asks for a PIN or a generic Bluetooth setup behaves oddly, close that attempt and initiate the connection from Dolphin’s Controller Settings instead. These steps are for Dolphin; the available instructions do not establish one universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 pairing procedure for using a Remote as a generic input device in other software.
If Dolphin does not find the Remote
- Confirm Bluetooth is available. If the PC lacks built-in Bluetooth, you may need a USB or PCIe adapter. Adapter compatibility varies, and no specific model is validated here.
- Check the Dolphin slot. It must be set to Real Wii Remote, and another Remote must not already be using the slot.
- Restart the scan and press the correct buttons. Select Refresh, then press 1 + 2 together—or the Sync button on a -TR Remote—while Dolphin is scanning.
- Turn off nearby consoles. Switch off a nearby Wii or Wii U for the duration of the connection attempt.
- Leave Dolphin active. Keep a game running or the configuration window open while connecting.
Standard connection versus Bluetooth Passthrough
Dolphin’s regular Real Wii Remote method is the starting point for an ordinary connection. Bluetooth Passthrough is an advanced alternative: it gives Dolphin direct control of a compatible Bluetooth adapter through a LibUSB driver. Dolphin describes possible improvements to Remote audio, MotionPlus detection, and synchronization, but says results vary by adapter.

Passthrough is not required for ordinary setup. Consider it only if you need its more direct Bluetooth access and are prepared for driver changes and the limitations above.

Nintendo’s Wii Remote sync instructions describe connecting to a Wii console: press the Sync button under the Remote’s battery cover, then the red Sync button on the console; a steady player LED indicates synchronization. That is not Dolphin’s PC procedure. For Dolphin, use the Real Wii Remote slot, select Refresh, then press 1 + 2 or, on a -TR model, its Sync button.
