Microsoft Edge Game Assist is an Edge-powered browser widget inside Xbox Game Bar. It lets you look up boss guides, watch videos, search the web, or use services such as Discord, Twitch, and Spotify while a game remains visible. Microsoft announced worldwide availability on May 29, 2025; the current product page calls it Edge for Game Bar.
What is Microsoft Edge Game Assist?
Game Assist is a browser widget displayed through Xbox Game Bar—not a separate game or a hardware accessory. It puts web content over your running game, so you can consult a walkthrough or search for a boss strategy without switching away from the game window. Microsoft describes it as an in-game browser, and says it can run alongside other overlays.
It can also be used for videos, music, and communication services. Microsoft’s preview documentation specifically names Discord, Twitch, and Spotify. The browser shares data with Edge on your PC, including favorites, history, cookies, and form fills.
How to open Game Assist while playing
- Make sure Microsoft Edge, Windows 11, and Xbox Game Bar are up to date.
- While your game is running, press Windows key + G to open Xbox Game Bar.
- Open the Game Assist widget, then use its browser to search for a guide, video, or other web content.
Microsoft’s support FAQ also documents opening Game Assist with Ctrl + G or pasting a game title to find help. If those options are unavailable, update Edge and Game Bar and check that your Windows version meets the requirements below.

What you need to run it
Microsoft Support lists Edge 137 or later and Windows 11 Home, Education, or Pro as requirements. Its FAQ specifies Windows 11 version 22H2 or later and says Windows and Game Bar must be current. The feature is part of Edge and Game Bar, so Microsoft does not describe a second monitor or separate Game Assist purchase as a requirement.
Microsoft announced a preview in November 2024, then announced its move to the Edge Stable channel in January 2025. Worldwide availability followed on May 29, 2025. Microsoft’s current product page uses the name Edge for Game Bar (formerly Microsoft Edge Game Assist); the feature may therefore appear under either name in Microsoft materials.

Does it work with every game?
The browser widget can function over any game, according to Microsoft. A smaller set of enhanced games also receives game-specific tips and guides on the new-tab experience. These are different levels of support: a game can be usable with the general browser widget without having enhanced, tailored content.
Microsoft maintains a live list of enhanced games, which can change over time. The enhanced tips and guides are English-only for now. Check Microsoft’s enhanced-games list for current coverage rather than relying on a fixed list.

How Game Assist compares with Alt-Tab or a second monitor
| Option | What stays visible | Requirements and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Game Assist | A browser widget over the game, with web guides and other services. | Requires supported Windows 11 and Edge versions. Enhanced game-specific tips are available only for listed titles and are currently English-only. |
| Alt-Tab | Switches focus from the game to another window rather than keeping the guide over gameplay. | Uses existing windows; whether the game remains visible depends on how it is displayed. |
| Second monitor | A separate display can keep a guide or video visible while the game stays on the primary display. | Requires additional display hardware and setup; it does not itself provide Game Assist’s browser integration or tailored enhanced-game tips. |
Game Assist’s practical advantage is having a browser available within Game Bar without leaving the game window. Microsoft says it can coexist with other overlays, but does not establish that it works identically with every game or overlay combination.

Microsoft’s published material describes access to browser content during play; it does not establish that Game Assist raises frame rates or reduces latency. Its usefulness is about convenience—keeping a guide or service accessible—not a documented performance benefit.
