The result keeps the original console’s distinctive case while running Raspberry Pi OS, RetroPie and Kodi—so it serves as both a retro-gaming system and a Linux computer.
What is PiStation 2?
Farizno’s PiStation 2 repurposes a standard, non-slim PS2 enclosure as a home for a Raspberry Pi. The original PlayStation 2 motherboard is removed; the Raspberry Pi handles the computing and software instead. The project retains the recognizable console shell and makes functional use of its front-panel controls, rather than treating them as decoration.
The featured build was reported with a 1TB SSD, according to Tom’s Hardware. Hackster describes the system as a Pi-powered gaming setup that can also run Linux, with a custom interface offering options such as Kodi and EmulationStation.
What can it do?
Retro gaming and media
RetroPie provides the retro-gaming environment, while EmulationStation can be used as its front end. Kodi adds media-center functionality. These are software options for the Raspberry Pi build; they do not make the machine a functioning original PS2 or establish compatibility with every game or system.

Linux computing
Because the PiStation 2 runs Raspberry Pi OS, it can also function as a Linux computer. Its role is therefore broader than a dedicated retro-gaming appliance, though the available sources do not give independent performance benchmarks or a complete specification for desktop use.
How do the original PS2 buttons work with the Pi?
The build wires the PS2’s power and eject buttons to the Raspberry Pi. Tom’s Hardware reports that the power button performs a safe Pi shutdown, while the eject button controls an LED strip. Hackster also notes that the button LEDs are integrated into the project.

- 2 USB 3.0 ports; 2 USB 2.0 ports.
- Raspberry Pi standard 40 pin GPIO header (fully backwards compatible with previous boards)
Farizno described further integration in a statement to Hackster: “Additional features that really round the project out include full integration and functionality of the PlayStation’s front panel power and eject buttons as well as the LEDs on the buttons, PWM-controlled PS2 fan speed based on CPU temperature, and RGB LED lighting to add some visual flair,”
The original PS2 fan is also used with PWM control that adjusts fan speed according to CPU temperature. RGB lighting shines through the front vent. Together, the repurposed buttons, fan and lighting make the conversion feel more integrated than simply placing a Pi inside an old shell.

What parts and modifications does the conversion involve?
The documented build centers on a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, housed inside a full-size PS2 shell. Its Pi ports are aligned with the console’s rear openings using a custom 3D-printed mount. The featured configuration also includes a 1TB SSD, and the original front-panel controls and fan are wired into the new system.
- Core computer: Raspberry Pi 4 Model B.
- Storage: A 1TB SSD in the configuration reported by Tom’s Hardware; the sources do not establish that capacity as a requirement for all builds.
- Case and port access: A full-size PS2 shell and a custom 3D-printed mount to line up the Pi’s external ports with the rear of the case.
- Controls: USB or Bluetooth controllers, including PlayStation and Xbox controllers, can be used.
- Cooling and lighting: The build uses the PS2 fan with temperature-based PWM control and adds RGB lighting.
- Software: Raspberry Pi OS with RetroPie and Kodi; Hackster also describes a custom interface with multiple OS options, including Kodi and EmulationStation.
This is a case conversion, not a drop-in motherboard swap. The Pi needs a mount and accessible port openings, and the buttons and fan require wiring and control integration. The sources document the project’s features but do not provide a complete parts list, wiring diagram or step-by-step build guide, so they are not enough by themselves to reproduce every detail.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
How does the original-shell build compare with a printable PS2-style case?
A later Adafruit project documents a separate PS2-themed enclosure for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and Raspberry Pi 5. It is printed in four parts, and Adafruit recommends supports for the top section. Unlike Farizno’s conversion, this is a purpose-made printable case—not a gutted original Sony console.
| Consideration | Converted original PS2 shell | Printable PS2-themed case |
|---|---|---|
| Authenticity | Uses a real full-size PS2 enclosure. | Recreates the PS2 look in a newly printed enclosure. |
| Cutting and wiring effort | Requires internal conversion, rear-port alignment and wiring for the original controls and fan. | Requires printing and assembly; the cited Adafruit post recommends supports for the top section. |
| Rear-port access | A custom printed mount aligns the Pi’s ports with the rear of the shell. | Not stated in the cited Adafruit post. |
| Cooling headroom | The reported build uses the PS2 fan with CPU-temperature-based PWM control. | Not stated in the cited Adafruit post. |
| Controller connectivity | USB and Bluetooth controllers are supported, including PlayStation and Xbox controllers. | Not stated in the cited Adafruit post. |
| Storage expansion | The featured configuration was reported with a 1TB SSD; broader expansion details are not stated. | Not stated in the cited Adafruit post. |
| Reversibility | Wiring and case modifications mean it is a conversion rather than an untouched console. | Does not require converting an original PS2 shell. |
| Printable files | Not stated in the cited project reports. | Adafruit documents a four-part printable design for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and Pi 5. |
Adafruit’s separate case is described in its PiStation 2 post. It offers a route for builders who want the PS2 appearance without modifying an original console, while Farizno’s project is the choice for those specifically interested in reusing genuine PS2 hardware as a shell.

Is a Raspberry Pi 4 a replacement for the PS2 motherboard?
For this project, yes: the Raspberry Pi replaces the original console’s computing hardware and runs its own operating system and applications. But “replacement” here means a new computer in a repurposed case, not restoration of PS2 hardware or a guarantee that original PS2 games run. The documented software focuses on Raspberry Pi OS, RetroPie and Kodi; the sources do not establish native PS2 game compatibility.
