If your Wii remote is not connecting to a PC for Dolphin, pair it from Dolphin—not your computer’s Bluetooth settings. Set the Wii Remote slot to Real Wii Remote, choose Refresh, then press 1 + 2 together on a standard remote or the Sync button on a -TR model. If it still will not connect, check the PC’s Bluetooth radio, the selected slot, nearby consoles, and whether your operating system or adapter is interfering.
Start by using Dolphin’s pairing path
These steps are for connecting a physical Wii Remote to Dolphin Emulator. Dolphin warns: “Do not pair the Wii Remote to your computer through its native Bluetooth settings.” The operating system can interfere with Dolphin’s connection, so begin in the emulator instead. See Dolphin’s Configuring controllers guide.
- In Dolphin, open Options → Controller Settings.
- Under Wii Controllers, set the slot you want to use to Real Wii Remote. Make sure that slot is not already claimed by another remote.
- Open the controller configuration for that slot and select Refresh.
- Press 1 + 2 simultaneously on a standard Wii Remote. On a Wii Remote -TR model, press its Sync button instead.
If Continuous Scanning is enabled, Dolphin can connect without you pressing Refresh each time. Keep the game or controller configuration window open while initiating the connection. Dolphin supports up to four Wii Remotes, but each must have an available slot.
Check the PC’s Bluetooth and the pairing environment
- Confirm the PC has Bluetooth. Wii Remotes connect over Bluetooth. Many desktop PCs need a USB or PCIe Bluetooth adapter; some Wi-Fi cards include Bluetooth as well. If Bluetooth is already available, try Dolphin’s setup before buying hardware.
- Turn off nearby Wii or Wii U consoles. A nearby console can compete for the remote during pairing.
- Recheck the Dolphin slot. It must be set to Real Wii Remote and not occupied by another remote.
- Do not pair in the computer’s Bluetooth control panel for Dolphin use. Use Refresh or Continuous Scanning in Dolphin, then press the appropriate remote button.
If it connects, then a game says it disconnected
A Wii game may treat the remote as disconnected after several minutes of inactivity even while the remote remains on and connected to Dolphin. Reconnect it through Tools → Connect Wii Remotes → Connect Wii Remote #, use the configured hotkey for that remote, or press a button on the remote. Dolphin lists Alt-F5 as the Windows default hotkey for Wii Remote 1.

Dolphin generally does not turn off Wii Remotes automatically as a Wii console does; Linux is the exception. To turn a remote off, hold its power button for about a second.
When the basic setup is right but pairing still fails
Platform and adapter behavior can affect the result. In its September 16, 2025 Release 2509 progress report, the Dolphin Emulator Project described connections as generally working well on Linux, more sporadic on Windows, and difficult to pair on macOS because Apple’s Bluetooth stack does not handle Nintendo’s non-standard PIN codes well. The report also notes that other software—particularly Steam on Windows—can disrupt communication. These are project-level observations, not proof of the cause on a particular PC.

If Steam or other software is running, close it temporarily and try Dolphin’s pairing steps again. If the problem persists, note your operating system, Dolphin version, remote revision, and Bluetooth adapter model; those details can help narrow down an adapter- or platform-specific issue.
Should you try Bluetooth passthrough?
With passthrough, Dolphin directly controls a compatible Bluetooth adapter instead of relying on the host operating system’s Bluetooth stack. It can improve Wii Remote behavior and avoid some host-stack issues, but it is not a universal fix. Dolphin’s Bluetooth Passthrough guide says compatibility varies substantially between adapters.

| Connection mode | What it does | Benefits and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Real Wii Remote through host Bluetooth | Dolphin communicates with the remote through the PC’s Bluetooth connection. | The normal first setup path. The host Bluetooth stack or adapter may interfere, and behavior varies by operating system. |
| Bluetooth passthrough | Dolphin takes direct control of a compatible Bluetooth adapter. | Can avoid some host-stack and emulation issues. Compatibility varies; Windows requires a special driver, the adapter cannot serve other Bluetooth devices while Dolphin controls it, and save states are unavailable. |
| Emulated Wii Remote | Dolphin emulates a Wii Remote and accepts input from a PC controller or other device. | A workaround if you do not need to use the physical Wii Remote. It does not fix the physical remote’s connection and may require per-game mapping. |
Dolphin’s passthrough article says roughly 12 adapters had been tested by several users, with three failing altogether and two showing serious issues. This is not a controlled benchmark or a guarantee about current models. The project says that adapter results vary enough that a higher price alone does not ensure better compatibility.
The project’s Release 2509 report says that update added Realtek firmware loading for passthrough, enabling previously unsupported RTL8761-based adapters. It specifically mentions the TP-Link Bluetooth 5.3 Nano and Asus USB-BT500. That release-specific statement does not establish that either adapter works with every computer, Dolphin mode, or setup.

Dolphin’s passthrough article says, “The only guarantee is that the Wii Bluetooth Adapter will provide the absolute best experience.” That is the project’s stated recommendation for passthrough, not a claim that every third-party adapter will fail or that passthrough is required for a normal connection.

The Mayflash DolphinBar manual describes an integrated Bluetooth receiver, Wii Remote Plus support, support for up to four controllers, and Dolphin compatibility. It may suit a non-passthrough setup, but it is not a passthrough adapter: Dolphin explicitly says the DolphinBar does not expose its Bluetooth adapter to the system and cannot be used for Bluetooth passthrough. See the DolphinBar instruction manual and Dolphin’s passthrough guide.

If you meant a PC game rather than Dolphin
The steps above address a Wii Remote that will not connect to Dolphin. A PC game or another application may require a different setup, and the available guidance here does not establish the right pairing procedure for those cases. Dolphin’s download page lists its available releases and supported platforms.
