For a Ryzen X3D gaming PC, first confirm that the motherboard BIOS supports your exact processor; then start with CPU settings at their defaults. Enabling EXPO is optional if you have a compatible DDR5 kit and want its rated memory profile. PBO and Curve Optimizer are optional tuning tools, not settings every X3D owner needs to change.
1. Check CPU and BIOS compatibility first
Identify the exact processor and motherboard model, then check the board maker’s CPU support list and BIOS instructions. A newer CPU may require a BIOS update before the system can boot. AMD’s guidance is to get both the update and procedure from the motherboard or system manufacturer: BIOS Updates for AMD Ryzen Desktop Systems (updated August 12, 2026).
If the PC will not boot with the new CPU, AMD lists several possible routes: ask the retailer about an update service, temporarily use an older supported processor, use USB BIOS Flashback if the motherboard has it, or contact the system or motherboard manufacturer. The available method depends on the board and system; follow its documentation rather than relying on a generic flashing procedure.
2. Start with stock CPU settings
After confirming compatibility, load or retain the motherboard’s default firmware settings for CPU behavior. Boot into the operating system and check that the system behaves normally before changing optional tuning controls. There is no single AMD-published X3D BIOS preset that applies to every CPU, motherboard, cooler, and firmware version.

- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
Do not apply generic manual voltage, power-limit, or thermal-limit values. Motherboard interfaces and feature behavior vary, and a setting that is appropriate for one combination is not automatically appropriate for another. Keep thermal protections enabled.
3. Decide whether to enable EXPO
EXPO applies a supported memory profile to compatible DDR5 memory. It is optional: the system can boot without it, and the fact that you own an X3D processor does not mean you need to buy new RAM. Check the motherboard’s memory support information and your kit’s specifications before selecting a profile.

Memory configuration matters. For the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, AMD’s specification lists DDR5-5600 for the stated two-DIMM configurations (2x1R and 2x2R), and DDR5-3600 for the stated four-DIMM configurations (4x1R and 4x2R). These are model-specific published specifications, not a promise that every kit will run at those speeds in every system. Do not apply them to other X3D processors. AMD lists EXPO support for both the 9800X3D and 7800X3D.
To try EXPO, find the memory-profile control in the motherboard firmware and select the appropriate EXPO profile for your kit. The menu name and location differ by manufacturer. After saving, verify that the system boots and remains stable; if it does not, return to defaults and consult the board and memory documentation.

4. Treat PBO and Curve Optimizer as optional tuning
AMD lists Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) and Curve Optimizer support for the 9800X3D and 7800X3D. Their presence does not make them required setup steps. Leave them at their defaults if your goal is a straightforward, stock configuration.
PBO runs outside AMD’s factory specifications, and AMD says its product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking. System-maker or retailer warranty terms may also be affected. Curve Optimizer and PBO controls can be exposed through BIOS or Ryzen Master, but names, availability, and behavior depend on the processor and firmware. AMD describes the utility and its controls on the Ryzen Master page.

- AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D Desktop Processor
If you choose to tune, use documentation for your exact CPU and motherboard, change settings deliberately, and validate stability under your normal workloads. Avoid treating a number found for another system as a universal X3D setting; the processor, board, cooling, and firmware are all relevant, and no fixed performance gain can be assumed.

AMD specifies a maximum operating temperature of 95°C for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and 89°C for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. These are different model specifications, not instructions to raise a BIOS temperature limit. Check the AMD product page for your processor rather than generalizing one model’s figure to the whole X3D family.

6. Install chipset drivers after operating-system setup
Once the operating system is installed, install the applicable AMD chipset package or the package supplied by your system or motherboard maker. AMD’s Ryzen Chipset Driver release notes list the 9800X3D as supported. This is a software setup step; it does not require a special X3D BIOS setting.
Quick Recap
Quick setup checklist
- Confirm the exact CPU and motherboard model.
- Check the motherboard CPU support list and required BIOS version; update only by following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Start with default CPU settings and confirm normal operation.
- Enable EXPO only if you have a compatible kit and want to use its profile; check memory and DIMM support.
- Leave PBO and Curve Optimizer at defaults unless you intentionally want to tune and can verify stability.
- Install the relevant chipset drivers and check system behavior again.
