AMD specifically recommends a liquid cooler for optimal performance with the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, but that guidance is model-specific.
Does every Ryzen X3D processor need liquid cooling?
No. Cooling is essential, but the cooler type depends on the exact processor and build. AMD says proper cooling is mandatory to avoid damaging a processor, and its general guidance is to use a cooling solution that meets the CPU’s default TDP specification and is mounted and operating correctly. The Ryzen 7 9850X3D has a model-specific recommendation
AMD’s Ryzen 7 9850X3D specification page lists a 120 W default TDP, a 95°C maximum operating temperature (Tjmax), and the recommendation: “Liquid cooler recommended for optimal performance.” AMD also says the boxed processor does not include a thermal solution. This is a recommendation for the 9850X3D, not a blanket requirement for all Ryzen X3D CPUs.
Match the cooler to your build
Before buying or reusing a cooler, check the CPU’s product page and the cooler’s socket support. Also confirm the cooler fits your case—especially radiator clearance for liquid coolers—and consider airflow, workload, ambient temperature, and your noise and performance priorities. AMD notes that CPU temperature varies with the cooler, case airflow, ambient temperature, custom settings, and workload; temperature, power, and performance are related. Its guidance does not establish that one cooler model suits every X3D processor.

Do you need to enable EXPO on a Ryzen X3D?
No. A system can use supported baseline memory settings without EXPO. AMD describes EXPO as a user-friendly DDR5 memory-overclocking feature for Ryzen processors on Socket AM5; it is an optional way to use a supported memory profile, not an X3D setup requirement. Check AMD’s EXPO overview and your motherboard’s documentation before enabling a profile.
Check compatibility before selecting a profile
- Look up the exact memory kit on your motherboard’s qualified vendor list (QVL), and check whether the board and BIOS support the kit and the rated features you want to use.
- Use a matched kit sold together, rather than combining separate memory kits.
- Install the DIMMs in the slots recommended by the motherboard manual.
- Choose only an EXPO or other memory profile supported by the BIOS and board documentation.
AMD’s memory troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the QVL and supported feature ratings. It also advises updating the BIOS if needed, restoring optimized defaults, reseating memory, and selecting a supported BIOS profile when troubleshooting instability.

What if you want to tune more than memory?
AMD Ryzen Master can store user-defined CPU and DDR5 memory profiles and adjust memory timings. It also exposes Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) and Curve Optimizer controls. These are separate from simply choosing an EXPO memory profile: AMD warns that PBO operates outside factory specifications and can invalidate the AMD product warranty, and may void a system-maker or retailer warranty. AMD’s January 6, 2025 announcement described a design change in the second-generation V-Cache models Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D: their cache sits below the core complex die, bringing the Zen 5 cores closer to the cooling solution. The announcement listed the 9950X3D at 16 cores, 32 threads, 144 MB total cache, and 170 W TDP, and the 9900X3D at 12 cores, 24 threads, 140 MB total cache, and 120 W TDP. Those are launch-time specifications for those two processors, not cooler recommendations.
