PS5 QSSR vs. Native Resolution: Which Looks Better in Supported Games?

Sony claims QSSR improves image detail and stability on standard PS5, but its announcement does not establish whether it looks better than native rendering. The answer depends on the game and a matched comparison.

There is no evidence-backed universal winner. Sony says its new Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) improves image detail and stability on standard PS5, but has not published a controlled comparison with native-resolution rendering. The answer depends on each game’s implementation—and on a fair, matched comparison.

What QSSR does on PS5

Announced by Sony Interactive Entertainment on October 1, 2026, QSSR is an AI-guided upscaling option designed for standard PS5. Sony describes it as a new performance tier developed from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, using a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation for PS5 performance. Sony says PSSR remains its highest-tier upscaling technology on PS5 Pro. Sony’s announcement names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to use the QSSR library; patches add QSSR as an additional graphics option in those titles. Sony says the technology will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but has not published a comprehensive list of future supported games. Availability is therefore title- and patch-specific.

What Sony says looks better

Sony and the developers behind the first announced games describe QSSR as improving detail and stability. Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, says: “QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey.”

Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, says: “QSSR excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the PS5 console until now.” Sony graphics engineer Daniel Craig characterizes QSSR as providing “some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5,” while describing PSSR as the gold standard on PS5 Pro.

These are vendor and developer descriptions, not independent head-to-head test results. Sony’s announcement supplies no measured QSSR-versus-native image-quality score, internal-resolution figures, pixel-count analysis, or controlled image samples for the two games.

Does QSSR beat native resolution?

The official evidence does not establish that QSSR always looks better—or that native rendering is always sharper. “Native resolution” describes rendering at the target resolution rather than reconstructing an image from a lower-resolution input. QSSR is an upscaling option, but the announcement does not specify the internal resolution used by either game when QSSR is enabled. A console’s output resolution alone cannot tell you the game’s internal rendering resolution.

In a particular game, the useful comparison is between the actual graphics modes the game offers. Look for how each handles fine detail, moving objects, edge shimmer and reconstruction artifacts, and check whether the modes differ in output or frame-rate targets. Without observed, documented comparisons under matched conditions, none of these axes has an established winner.

How to make a fair comparison

  1. Confirm the exact setup. Record the game, patch, PS5 model and graphics mode. Verify in the game’s settings or documentation that one option is QSSR and the other actually uses native rendering; do not assume a mode’s rendering method from its name.
  2. Match the scene and movement. Compare the same location, camera angle and camera movement. Still images may reveal fine-detail differences, while motion is needed to judge temporal stability and shimmer.
  3. Keep display conditions consistent. Use the same output resolution and display, with the same relevant picture settings. Sony notes that PS5 image quality depends on the home entertainment setup. Its guidance says 4K output requires a compatible 4K screen and selection of 2160p output. See Sony’s PS5 resolution guidance.
  4. Compare specific outcomes. Check detail reconstruction, stability during motion, edge shimmer and visible artifacts. Record any resolution or frame-rate differences only when the game or a documented test establishes them.
  5. Separate observation from claims. A controlled capture or documented test can support observations about a particular game and setup. Sony’s or a developer’s qualitative statements should remain attributed to them, not presented as independent measurements.

Do not confuse QSSR with PS5 Pro’s PSSR setting

Sony’s support page documents an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting for compatible PSSR games on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. It does not identify that setting as a QSSR control. The PS5 Pro PSSR setting should not be treated as a switch for QSSR in standard-PS5 games.

  • 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
  • Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.

The same support guidance explains that output resolution is selected through the console’s resolution settings and depends on compatible display hardware. That output setting does not, by itself, reveal a game’s internal rendering resolution.

What is established—and what is not

  • Established: Sony announced QSSR for standard PS5, named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first games, and says patches add it as an additional graphics option.
  • Attributed claims: Sony and developers describe improvements to image detail and stability.
  • Not established by the published announcement: a universal visual winner, a QSSR-versus-native internal-resolution table, a measured quality score, or an FPS comparison for the two named games.
