PS5 QSSR vs. AMD FSR: How Sony’s Upscaling Compares

QSSR is Sony’s AI upscaler for supported base-PS5 games; PSSR is for PS5 Pro, while AMD FSR is a broader PC graphics suite. They are related technologies, not interchangeable implementations, and official sources do not establish a universal quality winner.

QSSR and AMD FSR are not direct equivalents: QSSR is Sony’s AI upscaler for supported games on the base PS5, while FSR is AMD’s broader graphics-technology suite for supported PC games and hardware. PS5 Pro uses Sony’s separate PSSR feature. Sony and AMD share graphics technology through a collaboration, but that does not make the console and PC implementations identical—and official sources do not establish a universal visual-quality winner.

QSSR, PSSR and FSR are different things

The names are easy to conflate, but they refer to technologies aimed at different platforms and scopes. Sony describes QSSR as a streamlined, PS5-tuned neural-network upscaling tier for the base console. PSSR is the AI upscaler Sony associates with PS5 Pro. AMD’s FSR family is a suite of PC graphics features, with availability shaped by the game and hardware. Sony’s QSSR announcement and AMD’s current FSR overview describe those distinct roles.

Technology Where it applies What it does What to know about support
QSSR Supported games on base PS5 Sony calls it a streamlined AI upscaling architecture tuned for PS5, intended to improve image detail and stability. Game-specific. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as initial titles receiving it as an additional graphics option.
PSSR, including its upgraded version Supported games on PS5 Pro Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel while upscaling. Game-specific. Sony says outcomes vary by title; support for upgraded PSSR depends on game implementation.
AMD FSR Supported PC games and compatible graphics hardware A suite that includes FSR Upscaling, Frame Generation, Ray Regeneration and Radiance Caching. Features and hardware requirements vary. AMD says its ML-based FSR upscaling is available on selected Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 cards; RX 6000 support is planned for 2027.

The QSSR game examples and their announced patch plans come from Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement. AMD’s descriptions of FSR features and compatibility are on its FSR technologies page. A game listing an FSR feature does not mean every feature in the suite is enabled, nor that its settings match a console game’s options.

How Sony’s technology relates to AMD FSR

Sony says its updated PSSR algorithm and neural network stem from Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD, and describes FSR 4 as another manifestation of that collaboration. That is evidence of a relationship between the work, not proof that all versions of FSR and PSSR are interchangeable. QSSR is described as a PS5-tuned implementation, and the PC version of FSR runs within a different platform and hardware context. Sony’s upgraded-PSSR announcement explains the collaboration; AMD’s current naming and feature descriptions show the scope of its PC suite.

What can be said about image quality and performance

Sony positions QSSR as improving image detail and stability on base PS5. Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine; Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry described fine-detail resolution and temporal stability in Ghost of Yōtei. Those are developer observations about their games, not independent comparisons against FSR. Sony’s announcement includes those remarks.

There is no controlled, same-game, same-scene QSSR-versus-current-FSR comparison in the official material cited here. So it does not support a blanket claim that QSSR is sharper, faster, or better. Upscaling results can depend on the game’s implementation, the chosen graphics mode, internal and output resolution, motion, and—in PC comparisons—the specific FSR features and hardware in use.

Performance claims also need their platform context. Sony’s 2024 PS5 Pro announcement cited 67 percent more GPU compute units and 28 percent faster memory than the then-current PS5, and claimed up to 45 percent faster gameplay rendering from the Pro’s upgraded GPU. These are historical Sony specifications and a vendor performance claim about PS5 Pro—not measurements of QSSR quality or a comparison with an AMD graphics card. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement provides the figures.

How to make a fair QSSR-versus-FSR comparison

A meaningful visual comparison needs more than two screenshots labeled “upscaling.” Match the same game and scene as closely as possible, and report the conditions that can change what the viewer sees:

  • Whether frame generation is enabled; do not treat generated frames as an upscaler setting.
  • Capture method and any differences in sharpening or display processing.
  • Motion and fine detail, including shimmering and stability over time—not just a still image.

Without those details, a comparison may reflect different game settings or platform implementations rather than the upscalers alone. Sony also cautions that results vary by title in its upgraded-PSSR rollout announcement.

Which one matters for your setup?

  • Base PS5 owner: QSSR matters only in games that add support; Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as initial examples.
  • PS5 Pro owner: Look for PSSR or upgraded-PSSR support in the particular game. Sony’s rollout information identifies supported titles and notes that results vary by game.
  • PC player: Check the game’s own graphics options and AMD’s current FSR compatibility information. FSR features are not a single all-or-nothing setting, and ML-based upscaling has stated GPU requirements.
