Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is announced as an image-quality improvement for standard PS5: Sony says it improves image detail and stability. Sony has not claimed that it raises frame rates or published before-and-after performance measurements, so QSSR should not be treated as an FPS boost without game-specific evidence.
What QSSR is—and what Sony says it improves
Sony describes QSSR as a new AI-upscaling performance tier for PS5, developed from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. The October 1, 2026 announcement attributes QSSR to a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5. Sony’s stated results are “improvements to both image detail and image stability.” Sony’s announcement
Sony positions QSSR as the quicker performance tier for PS5, while describing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on PS5 Pro as the “gold standard.” That is Sony’s positioning, not a third-party benchmark comparing the two upscalers.
Does QSSR increase FPS on PS5?
Sony’s announcement does not say that QSSR increases frame rate. It gives no before-and-after FPS, frame-time, latency, internal-resolution, or graphics-mode measurements for supported games. Calling QSSR a “performance tier” describes the upscaler’s computational positioning; by itself, it does not establish that a game will run at a higher frame rate.

Developers may use QSSR in a particular graphics option alongside their own resolution or performance targets, but Sony has not explained the mechanics or outcomes of those options. Whether QSSR changes performance therefore depends on title-specific implementation and needs measured evidence for that game.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to use the QSSR library. Both are being patched to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Sony says the library will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers and expects more games to use it, but does not provide a complete future compatibility list. Check a game’s current patch notes and graphics menu for availability.

The developers’ comments describe perceived image benefits, not independent performance measurements. Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald says QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine; Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry says it brings greater clarity and detail to Ghost of Yōtei.
How to judge QSSR in a specific game
To find out whether QSSR affects performance in a supported title, compare the same graphics mode with QSSR off and on, using the same PS5 and display. Look for measured results on these points:
Rank #3
- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
- Frame-rate consistency: Does the game hold its target more reliably, or does the measured frame rate change?
- Image detail: Are fine textures and edges clearer?
- Temporal stability: Do details shimmer less, or do ghosting and other artifacts appear?
- Rendering and mode trade-offs: Do internal resolution or other settings differ between options?
Sony’s announcement does not answer those comparisons, so a stronger claim about FPS or a particular game’s trade-offs requires title-specific measurements.

PlayStation Support explains that PS5 detects a connected TV’s capabilities and lets users change video output settings, including supported 1440p and 120 Hz output. These settings govern the video signal the display can show; the support guide does not specify QSSR requirements or show that changing output resolution or refresh rate increases a game’s frame rate. See PlayStation’s PS5 resolution guide.
