Qualcomm’s 2025 Snapdragon G refresh adds three tiers for handheld gaming: G3 Gen 3 for demanding native games, G2 Gen 2 for mobile and cloud play, and G1 Gen 2 for fanless handhelds centered on cloud gaming. The best fit depends on whether you want to run games on the device or stream them, and on the handheld’s screen, controls, storage, cooling and price—not the chip name alone.
What Qualcomm announced
On March 17, 2025, Qualcomm announced Snapdragon G3 Gen 3, G2 Gen 2 and G1 Gen 2. It named AYANEO, ONEXSUGAR and Retroid Pocket among the manufacturers expected to release handhelds during that quarter. Those were announcement expectations, not a guarantee of current availability or a particular configuration.
The G Series is aimed at dedicated gaming handhelds. Qualcomm says compatible devices can access cloud gaming services including Microsoft xCloud, Nvidia GeForce Now, Sony PlayStation Plus and SteamLink. That does not mean the chips run every PC or console game locally: streaming depends on the service, game catalogue, network and device.
Which Snapdragon G chip is best for a handheld?
Choose by workload. G3 Gen 3 is the enthusiast option for demanding games running on the handheld; G2 Gen 2 is positioned between native mobile play and cloud gaming; G1 Gen 2 targets fanless devices and streaming. Qualcomm’s specifications describe platform capabilities, but they cannot tell you how a specific handheld performs in practice.

Every comparison figure in the table is a Qualcomm Technologies claim announced in 2025, not an independently published benchmark. Qualcomm’s stated G1 display-streaming target is up to 1080p at 120 FPS over Wi-Fi; it is not a promise that every game, display or network will sustain that resolution and frame rate.
G3 Gen 3 versus G2 Gen 2
The G3 Gen 3 is the higher-tier choice if local graphics capability is the priority. Qualcomm specifically positions it for demanding cross-platform games and identifies Unreal Engine 5 Lumen support as a first for the Snapdragon G platform line. The G2 Gen 2 is framed around a broader mix of mobile and cloud gaming, with Wi-Fi 7 and optional 5G mmWave.

Qualcomm’s generational performance claims are measured against different predecessors, so the figures do not directly compare G3 Gen 3 with G2 Gen 2. Nor do they establish actual frame rates, battery life or sustained performance in a finished handheld. Cooling design, power limits, software and the game itself matter; check reviews and the exact device configuration before treating a chip tier as a performance guarantee.
Can these handhelds play PC or console games?
“Play” can mean running a game locally or streaming it. Qualcomm lists cloud access to Microsoft xCloud, Nvidia GeForce Now, Sony PlayStation Plus and SteamLink for G-series handhelds. A cloud service streams supported titles over a network; SteamLink streams from a compatible PC. Access to those services does not turn the handheld into a device that natively runs every PC or console release.

For local games, the processor is only part of compatibility and experience. Check the handheld maker’s operating system, supported storefronts and game compatibility, as well as controls and storage. The chip announcement alone does not establish that a particular PC or console title will run on a given device.
Which handhelds use Snapdragon G chips?
Qualcomm’s current handheld-gaming page features the AYANEO Pocket S2 with Snapdragon G3 Gen 3, the transformable dual-screen ONEXSUGAR SUGAR 1 and the Retroid Pocket Classic. The product listing information cited here does not identify a G-series chip for the SUGAR 1 or Retroid Pocket Classic, so do not infer their processors from the brand or product family. Confirm the exact SoC for the retail model and configuration you are considering; product names and configurations can change.

Is G1 Gen 2 good for cloud gaming?
It is the tier Qualcomm explicitly describes for fanless handhelds and cloud gaming, and its stated target of up to 1080p at 120 FPS over Wi-Fi is relevant to streaming. A fanless design may suit a simpler, quieter handheld, but the chip specification does not establish battery life or how long a particular device sustains performance. For cloud play, also consider Wi-Fi quality, screen resolution and refresh rate, controls, ergonomics and the streaming service’s catalogue.

What to check before choosing a Snapdragon G handheld
- Exact processor: Verify the SoC in the specific retail configuration rather than relying on a product family name.
- How you play: Prioritize G3 Gen 3 for Qualcomm’s demanding native-game positioning; consider G2 Gen 2 for mobile and cloud use or G1 Gen 2 for a fanless cloud-focused device.
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi 7 is listed for G3 Gen 3 and G2 Gen 2; cellular is optional, not guaranteed in every handheld. G2’s optional cellular capability is 5G mmWave.
- Device design: Compare the actual screen, controls, storage and cooling approach. Qualcomm’s chip specifications do not settle these device-level trade-offs.
- Ownership costs and availability: Qualcomm’s platform pages do not establish independent battery tests, street prices or retailer availability. Check current pricing and availability in your region, and consult device-specific testing for battery life.
