In NCSOFT’s July 8, 2026 global-model notice, active Membership was required for both. The same announcement described premium-pass rewards that could include upgrade materials. Those mechanics give players a reason to scrutinize the model, but they do not by themselves prove that Aion 2 is pay-to-win—or that monetization is literally killing gaming.
What makes Aion 2’s monetization worth scrutiny?
The concern is not simply that Aion 2 has a shop. The more important question is what payment changes: access to a game system, the pace of progression, or a player’s competitive power. A cosmetic purchase is different from an upgrade aid, and both are different from a paid gate on trading.
NCSOFT’s July 8, 2026 global-model notice, as summarized in secondary reporting, described Aion 2 as free to play while requiring paid Membership to use its player Market and Kina–Quna Exchange. That means “free to play” did not, in the announced model, mean free access to every part of the player economy. The report put U.S. Membership at $15 per month and said it included gameplay benefits and access to a shop for additional Kina purchases. Those are terms reported from the July announcement, not a verified description of every feature or price in the live global build on October 3, 2026.
What the two economy systems do
- Market: Players use gameplay-earned Kina to buy and sell items at player-set prices.
- Kina–Quna Exchange: One player can offer Kina in exchange for another player’s premium Quna.
- Membership gate: The July announcement said an active Membership was needed to use both systems.
A paid gate on an economy feature is not the same thing as selling stronger weapons. But trading can be an important route for exchanging resources and participating in a shared economy, so restricting it can affect the experience even if the gate does not directly add combat power. Whether the effect is substantial depends on the live rules and on how much players can do without trading.

What the announced shop and Daeva Pass offer
NCSOFT described shop cosmetics as aesthetic and said shop consumables would not affect gear progression or long-term power, while also saying they could be earned through regular gameplay. That is the publisher’s characterization of the announced items.
The same notice described a Daeva Pass with a free Standard Track and a Quna-priced Premium Track. Premium rewards could include cosmetics, items, upgrade materials, and other currencies. Because “upgrade materials” can be relevant to progression, it would be misleading to call the premium track cosmetic-only. The notice does not establish how much the materials speed progression, whether comparable rewards are available to free players, or whether they change competitive outcomes.
| Monetization feature | What the July 2026 announcement said | What that does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Market and currency exchange | Use required active Membership. | Shows a paid access condition for player-economy systems; does not, by itself, show a direct combat advantage. |
| Shop cosmetics | NCSOFT described them as aesthetic. | An aesthetic purchase does not establish a progression or power advantage. |
| Shop consumables | NCSOFT said they would not affect gear progression or long-term power and could also be earned through regular play. | This is the publisher’s description; it does not establish how quickly or reliably free players can earn them. |
| Daeva Pass Premium Track | Quna-priced rewards could include upgrade materials, among other items. | Signals a possible progression aid, but the notice does not establish its size or competitive effect. |
The company also announced Founder’s Packs with early access and cosmetic or consumable items. Package contents and availability can change, so the July announcement should not be treated as proof that a particular pack remains purchasable or has unchanged terms.

Is Aion 2 pay to win?
The available evidence is not enough to give a definitive yes or no about the global game’s actual competitive balance. The announced Membership gate affects access to trading systems; the premium pass could include upgrade materials. Neither fact alone proves that paying players become stronger in combat, progress faster by a decisive amount, or gain an advantage that free players cannot reasonably match.
A more useful assessment asks what the live game allows and what paid features change:
- Does payment directly increase combat strength, or only provide convenience or access?
- Do premium rewards accelerate progression, and can free players earn comparable items through play?
- Are paid rewards clearly listed, or does payment involve randomized outcomes?
- Can free players participate in core trading and social systems?
- Do the rules differ by region, platform, or date?
Those questions matter more than the presence of a shop. The July notice provides enough detail to identify concerns worth examining, but not enough to establish the effects of the global model in current play. In particular, it does not settle how Membership access, pass rewards, or trading rules have changed since the announcement.

Why monetization can damage trust beyond one game
Recurring monetization becomes contentious when players feel that payment is woven into ordinary progression or access rather than kept separate from play. A free entry point can coexist with meaningful paid advantages or gates; conversely, a game can sell items without making those items decisive. The design and its effects matter more than the label “free to play.”
Lundy, Raman, Fu, and Leyton-Brown’s 2023 paper, Pay to (Not) Play: Monetizing Impatience in Mobile Games, models paid wait-time skips. The authors describe how a small number of large spenders can support high revenue even when relatively few players buy, and how a paid skip can appeal both as immediate gratification and as a way to realize the value of completing a difficult task. It is an economic model of mobile-game incentives, not empirical evidence about Aion 2 or proof that every game using paid convenience harms players.
A September 2026 research article analyzing Steam reviews identifies backlash themes including pay-to-progress, pay-to-win, and distrust of purchases. That offers context for why players may react strongly when payment appears connected to advancement. It does not establish that Aion 2 has produced the same response or demonstrate the size of any harm in its global service.

What Aion 2’s launch numbers do—and don’t—tell us
In a January 7, 2026 press release, NCSOFT said Aion 2 launched in Korea and Taiwan on November 19, 2025, and reported more than KRW 100 billion in cumulative revenue by January 3, 2026—46 days after launch. The company also reported that more than one million characters purchased Memberships during that interval. These are company-reported figures for the Korea and Taiwan launch period, not measures of player approval, dissatisfaction, or the later global model’s performance.
The regional distinction matters: those launch figures should not be used to assume that the Korea and Taiwan service and the announced global business model have identical terms. Nor does strong revenue settle whether a monetization design is fair. It says what NCSOFT reported earning, not how players judged the systems behind that result.
Paid systems are not the same as prohibited real-money trading
NCSOFT’s global operation policy prohibits real-money trading of items or currency, account trading, unauthorized programs, and certain forms of open-market abuse, and lists account sanctions for violations. That policy concerns transactions and conduct outside the authorized monetization model. It is distinct from buying the game’s own Membership or premium currency, which the announced model itself offered.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
This distinction is useful for players: an official paid feature is governed by the game’s published terms, while third-party cash trading or account sales can violate those terms and risk sanctions. It does not answer whether an authorized feature is well balanced or good for the game.
How to judge the model as it stands
Aion 2 is a timely example of why “free to play” is not a complete description of a game’s economics. Its July global-model announcement paired free access with a Membership gate on two player-economy systems and a premium pass that could contain upgrade materials. Those are concrete design choices players can reasonably question. The evidence described here does not establish that the global version is definitively pay-to-win, how large any progression advantage is, or that monetization alone is “killing gaming.”
For a firm verdict, the decisive evidence would be current, region-specific rules and a clear account of how paid rewards compare with what free players can earn—including whether those differences affect competitive outcomes. Until then, it is more accurate to call the announced model a source of legitimate scrutiny than to treat a definitive pay-to-win verdict as settled.
