Both Meta Quest 3 and Quest 2 can play PC VR games through Meta Quest Link, and Steam lists both for Steam Link. Quest 3’s main PC VR advantages are its higher-resolution physical display, wider stated field of view, and continuously adjustable IPD—not faster PC game rendering. Your computer, connection, and settings still determine how well a game runs.
What changes on Quest 3
Higher physical display resolution
Meta lists Quest 3 at 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye and Quest 2 at 1832 × 1920 pixels per eye. These are panel specifications, not a guarantee that a PC game renders at that resolution. The game’s render resolution can be adjusted, and raising render scale increases GPU workload; see Meta’s render-scale guidance.
Wider stated field of view
Meta lists Quest 3’s field of view as 110° horizontal and 96° vertical. The official sources cited here do not provide a comparable Quest 2 figure, so a numerical difference between the two is not established.
More granular IPD adjustment
Quest 3 uses a continuous IPD slider, while Meta’s Quest 2 launch information describes three lens positions. The slider offers finer adjustment on paper, but the fit and comfort of either headset depend on the individual wearer.

Color passthrough and a depth sensor
Meta lists Quest 3 with 4-megapixel color stereoscopic passthrough (18 pixels per degree) and a depth sensor. Those are mixed-reality hardware features; they do not determine the image rendered by a PC VR game.
A newer standalone chip, not a faster PC
Quest 3 uses Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2; Quest 2 uses Snapdragon XR2, according to Meta’s device comparison and Quest 2 launch information. That difference does not mean Quest 3 renders PC VR games faster: in Link PC VR, the Windows PC does the game rendering, as Meta explains in its Link update.

What stays the same for PC VR
Both headsets have supported PC VR paths
Meta lists Quest 3 for wired Link and Air Link, and its Quest 2 launch announcement documented Oculus Link PC VR. Steam also lists both headsets as compatible with Steam Link. Compatibility does not establish identical image quality, latency, performance, or setup experience.
Both list the same refresh-rate targets
Meta’s rendering documentation lists 72, 80, 90, and 120 Hz target refresh rates for both Quest 2 and Quest 3. Meta separately announced 120 Hz Link support for Quest 3 in March 2024, stating: “Link now supports a 120Hz refresh rate for PCVR titles with Quest 3.” A supported mode is not a promise that a particular PC and game will sustain that frame rate. Meta warns that missed frame rates can cause judder and related artifacts.

The PC and connection remain central
With either headset, the PC’s capability, the game’s workload, connection quality, and graphics settings shape the experience. Wired Link, Air Link, and Steam Link are different ways to connect, but none removes the need to tune settings for the system and network. Meta’s rendering guidance describes refresh targets, while its render-scale documentation explains the image-detail versus GPU-workload trade-off.

Keep Quest 2 if its image and fit work for you
If your Quest 2 already suits your PC VR games and fits well, the documented case for changing headsets is about Quest 3’s display and adjustment features, not a PC performance boost. Improving a struggling game may instead mean lowering render scale or refresh target, or addressing the PC or connection.

Consider Quest 3 for its headset-side differences
Quest 3 is the more relevant choice if its higher physical resolution, wider stated field of view, continuous IPD adjustment, or color passthrough and depth hardware matter to you. Those specifications alone cannot predict an individual wearer’s perceived clarity or comfort.

Choose based on your preferred connection and setup. A wired Link cable is useful for a cable-connected session; it is not required for Air Link. Meta’s developer hardware setup guide recommends a USB-C data cable capable of at least 5 GB/s for its setup guidance. Check a cable’s data capability, length, and connector type before buying rather than assuming every USB-C cable is suitable. For wireless play, use the network requirements and compatibility guidance from the relevant service; Steam lists both headsets for Steam Link.

Meta reported in its March 2024 Link update an approximately 30% reduction in power consumption during Link sessions. In that same update, it estimated Air Link runtime at 90 minutes to about 140 minutes; these are Meta’s reported estimates, not guaranteed current runtimes. Meta said USB Link runtime depends on the power supplied by the PC.
Quest 2 availability
Meta’s Quest 2 product page said Quest 2 was no longer available from Meta as of the research date, October 3, 2026. That statement does not establish whether third-party sellers have stock; availability can vary by market.
