How to Connect an Original SNES to a Modern TV

Connect an original SNES by matching its model and signal output to your TV’s inputs. See when composite AV may work, when HDMI conversion is needed, and what to check for 240p compatibility.

To connect an original Super Nintendo to a modern TV, match the console’s video output to an input the TV supports. If the TV has compatible composite AV inputs, a matching SNES Multi-AV composite cable may be all you need. If it has only HDMI, use an SNES-compatible HDMI converter or a retro-gaming scaler, and check that the TV accepts the resulting 240p signal.

Check the console and TV before choosing a cable

Make sure you have an original SNES, not the Super NES Classic Edition. The Classic Edition uses a different setup: Nintendo’s HDMI instructions are specifically for that later product, not the original console (Nintendo’s Super NES Classic Edition setup guide).

Identify the original console’s model and region, then check the TV’s available inputs and its manual for supported analog connections and signal formats. The right cable or converter depends on both ends of the connection. Specialist guidance describes differences among SNES models, regions, and signal options; a product labeled “SNES” is not automatically compatible with every console (Electron Shepherd’s SNES connection guide).

Choose a connection that matches your TV

TV with compatible composite AV input

If the TV supports composite video and audio, a compatible SNES Multi-AV composite cable is a straightforward option. Nintendo’s legacy support page documents its Stereo AV Cable and SCART Adapter, but that does not establish compatibility for every SNES revision, third-party cable, or television. Check the cable’s fit and console compatibility, and confirm that the TV supports the relevant composite input (Nintendo UK’s legacy AV cable information).

TV with HDMI but no suitable analog input

Use a converter, a purpose-built SNES-to-HDMI cable, or a dedicated retro-gaming scaler with HDMI output. Before buying, check which console model and region it supports, which input signal it expects, and what display modes it sends to the TV. For example, Pound Technology describes its SNES HD Link Cable as using the console’s RGB signal and warns that 240p is not technically part of the HDMI standard, so some modern TVs may not accept it. This is manufacturer guidance, not independent testing across all TVs (Pound Technology’s SNES HD Link Cable information).

A scaler is another possible route: The Super SNES lists a line doubler/upscaler with HDMI output among its retro-gaming equipment. That listing is contextual information, not a compatibility test or a recommendation for every setup (The Super SNES equipment page).

Other analog connections

Composite, S-Video, and RGB/SCART are possible signal paths in some setups, but availability and compatibility depend on the console revision, region, cable, and display equipment. Use SCART or RGB only when the console and the rest of the signal chain support that connection; a SCART adapter alone does not guarantee a suitable signal path. See Electron Shepherd’s overview of SNES signal options and Nintendo UK’s legacy AV information.

Connect the SNES

  1. Identify the console. Confirm that it is an original SNES, and note its model and region.
  2. Inspect the TV. Check its input panel and manual for a compatible composite or other analog input, or confirm that it has HDMI.
  3. Match the signal path. For compatible composite input, use a cable that supports your console. For an HDMI-only TV, choose an SNES-compatible converter, HDMI cable, or scaler.
  4. Connect the cable or converter. Follow the product’s own connection instructions; the exact ports and steps vary by cable and device.
  5. Select the corresponding TV input. Use the TV’s input/source control to choose the port receiving the SNES signal.

If there is no picture

  • Check that the TV is set to the input you connected.
  • Recheck the cable path against the TV manual, including whether the TV supports the analog input and signal format you are using.
  • If the connection passes through an HDMI product, check its compatibility documentation for your SNES model and region, and whether your TV accepts 240p.

These checks address common connection points, but there is no single troubleshooting sequence established for every original SNES and television combination.

What to check when comparing adapters and scalers

  • Console fit: Which SNES model and region does the product support?
  • Input signal: Does it accept composite, S-Video, RGB, or another signal your console and cable can provide?
  • Output: Does it provide HDMI, and which display modes does it offer?
  • TV compatibility: Can your TV display the resulting signal, particularly 240p?
  • Purpose and cost: Is the device a simple connection adapter or a scaler intended to change how the image is presented? Compare actual product documentation and current prices; compatibility, image quality, and latency are not established here.
