If you want an MMO without a required monthly subscription, Guild Wars 2 is the clearest fit in the available official information: its core game is free, and expansions are optional paid additions. If you are comfortable paying a recurring fee for an MMO, FINAL FANTASY XIV Online offers a subscription-funded alternative. Neither game should be called definitively “not pay-to-win” on cost structure alone: that judgment depends on what paid items do in the modes you play.
What “fair monetization” means in an MMO
“Fair” is not a single business model. A game can be free to start but sell optional items; another can charge a subscription and still make its costs predictable. To compare them, separate four questions:
- Recurring cost: Is a monthly subscription required?
- Up-front and expansion cost: Do you need to buy the game or expansions to access particular content?
- Free access: How much can you play without paying?
- Paid power: Do purchases provide a meaningful competitive advantage in the modes you care about?
The official materials available for the two games below clearly describe their entry and billing models. They do not provide a complete independent audit of every shop item’s effect on competitive play, so the payment model is a useful starting point—not proof that a game has no pay-to-win systems.
Guild Wars 2: free core game, optional expansions, no required subscription
Guild Wars 2 is the stronger match if your priority is trying an MMO without committing to a monthly fee. ArenaNet says the core game is free to play and describes the model as buy-to-play with no monthly fees; expansions are paid additions that unlock more content. Its support page likewise says players can stay on a free account or buy expansions without taking on a monthly subscription. What the shop means for fairness
The game does have an in-game gem shop, so “no monthly fee” does not mean “no monetization.” ArenaNet says players can obtain items using gold earned in the game or purchase gems. That gives players a way to engage with the shop through play, but it does not by itself establish whether every paid item is harmless to competitive balance. ArenaNet’s explanation of gems and microtransactions describes those purchase routes.
Choose Guild Wars 2 if avoiding a required recurring charge matters most and you are comfortable with optional shop purchases and paid expansions. Before buying an expansion, check which content you want and what the current edition includes; availability and purchase terms can vary by platform or region.

FINAL FANTASY XIV Online: a subscription-funded alternative
FINAL FANTASY XIV Online is a reasonable comparison if you prefer a subscription-funded game and accept a recurring charge. Square Enix’s product page covers the game and its editions, while its user agreement describes monthly subscription billing. The agreement’s stated effective date is September 26, 2024; check the current terms for your platform and region before purchasing. A subscription makes the recurring-cost part of the decision explicit, but it does not settle whether optional paid items affect competitive power. The available official materials establish the subscription model, not a comprehensive assessment of every item or game mode. Consider the subscription a cost preference, not a guarantee about monetization fairness.

Pick Guild Wars 2 if you want subscription-free entry and the option to pay for expansions when you want more content. Pick FINAL FANTASY XIV Online if a subscription-funded model suits you better. If your deciding criterion is strictly “no pay-to-win,” inspect the current shop and the rules for your preferred competitive mode rather than treating either billing model as a guarantee.
