To play together, use a Java server running Geyser, which translates Bedrock connections so Bedrock players can join. The server owner must configure a reachable Bedrock listener, and every player needs a compatible game version and the multiplayer permissions required by their platform.
Can Java and Bedrock play together?
Not by connecting the two editions directly. Minecraft says Java and Bedrock use different servers, so players need to check which edition their friends have before choosing a multiplayer setup: Minecraft’s Java or Bedrock Edition guide.
The practical bridge described here is Geyser. It runs on the server side and allows Bedrock clients to join a Java server; it is not a client-side setting or a way to turn a Java Realm into a Bedrock Realm. Minecraft identifies Java Realms and Bedrock Realms Plus as edition-specific services, not interchangeable worlds.
What you need before setting up cross-play
- A Java server that accepts a client version supported by Geyser.
- Geyser installed in a compatible server or proxy setup, with a Bedrock listener configured by the server owner.
- A reachable Bedrock listener address and UDP port for Bedrock players to use.
- For console and mobile players, Microsoft account sign-in and any platform multiplayer subscription or account permissions that apply.
Geyser’s supported-version page, checked on October 3, 2026, listed Bedrock 26.30–26.51 and Java 26.2. It says Geyser emulates a Java 26.2 client, so the Java server must accept that version. These compatibility numbers can change with Minecraft releases; check Geyser’s current supported versions when configuring the server.

Choose how to run Geyser
Geyser’s setup documentation covers two broad approaches. The right one depends on what access you have to the Java server and whether its host permits the required network listener.
| Approach | Who manages it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Install Geyser on an existing Java server | The server owner installs and updates Geyser within the server’s deployment. | Confirm that the server software is supported and the host allows an incoming UDP listener for Bedrock. |
| Run Geyser as a standalone or proxy setup | The server owner manages a separate Geyser process or proxy connection to the Java server. | Confirm the Java server connection details and configure a reachable Bedrock UDP listener on the Geyser instance. |
See Geyser’s setup guide for installation details for the relevant server software or deployment. The host’s own port rules matter: some hosts may require the Bedrock listener to use an assigned port rather than Geyser’s default.

Configure the Bedrock listener and invite players
- Install Geyser. Follow the setup route for the Java server software or standalone/proxy arrangement you chose.
- Check the Bedrock listener settings. Geyser documents
0.0.0.0as the default listen address and19132as the default Bedrock port. Use the host’s required address and port if they differ. - Allow UDP traffic. Bedrock connects to Geyser over UDP. The Geyser guide states: “Since Minecraft: Bedrock Edition uses UDP, this port must allow UDP traffic.” Make sure the port is reachable from outside the host network, not merely open locally.
- Give Bedrock players the connection details. Share the server address and the configured Bedrock port. Java players continue to connect to the Java server through its usual address and port.
- Test the listener if players cannot connect. From the server environment, use Geyser’s diagnostic command
geyser connectiontest <ip> <port>with the public IP and configured Bedrock port. Check the host’s firewall and port rules if the listener is not reachable.
Geyser’s overview describes its purpose as allowing “Minecraft: Bedrock Edition clients to join Minecraft: Java Edition servers,” enabling cross-play between the editions: GeyserMC.
Check accounts, subscriptions, and permissions
Geyser does not replace Minecraft or platform account requirements. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements call for the matching edition for the hosted game type, the latest release, and a stable internet or LAN connection. The same guidance says console online multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass Core or PlayStation Plus, while Nintendo Switch players require Nintendo Switch Online. Console and mobile players need a Microsoft account; child accounts need multiplayer permissions enabled. For Realms, players also need an invitation from the host.

- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Those requirements are separate from Geyser. Console access to arbitrary third-party servers can involve platform-specific steps, so do not assume one universal procedure applies to Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch. Check the current instructions for the specific console, operating system, and Minecraft version.

Geyser’s documentation describes Floodgate as an option for setups where Bedrock users should be able to join without owning a paid Java Edition account. Floodgate is an authentication and server-configuration choice for the owner, not a requirement for every Geyser installation.

- Minecoins are Minecraft’s in-game currency, spendable via the Minecraft Marketplace
- With Minecoins, you can purchase content that adds variety to your gameplay and experiences (including server partners) across selected Minecraft games
- Gain access to an ever-expanding library of exciting content, crafted by community creators
- Add more cuteness, comedy, or chaos to your Bedrock worlds with Add-ons. Explore a catalog of custom blocks, items, mobs, recipes and other unique content. Add-ons are the easiest way to change your game, your way.
- Change the look of blocks, biomes, and even your favorite Minecraft mobs by purchasing unique texture packs and expand your in-game wardrobe by purchasing new skins and Character Creator items.
Geyser works with server-side mods, but mods that require installation on the player’s client do not work through this setup, according to its setup guide. Do not assume that a Java modpack or every Java-only feature will be available unchanged to Bedrock players.

Troubleshoot common connection problems
- The Bedrock player cannot find or join the server: Confirm that they are using the Geyser listener address and Bedrock port, not simply the Java server’s details. Check that the port is reachable externally and allows UDP.
- The server rejects a player after a game update: Compare the player’s version with Geyser’s current supported-version list and confirm the Java server accepts the Java client version Geyser emulates.
- The host does not allow the default port: Ask the host which Bedrock UDP port is assigned, then configure Geyser and give players that port. The default is not guaranteed on every deployment.
- A console player cannot connect: Check Microsoft account sign-in, multiplayer permissions, and the applicable online subscription. Then verify the console-specific method for connecting to a third-party server; Geyser alone does not remove platform restrictions.
- A modded Java server behaves differently for Bedrock players: Check whether the mod requires installation on each client. Client-side-install mods are not supported for Bedrock clients joining through Geyser.
