You can convert a Minecraft world between Java and Bedrock with a world-conversion tool such as Chunker, then import the converted file into the destination edition. You cannot move it by simply copying the save folder, and conversion is not lossless: entities and player inventories do not currently convert across editions, while some structure data may be unsupported or limited. Back up the original and check version compatibility before starting.
Before you convert: back up the world and check compatibility
Java and Bedrock store worlds in different formats. A Java save folder is not directly usable as a Bedrock world, or vice versa; conversion requires a tool that supports both the source and destination formats.
- Keep an untouched original. Convert a duplicate, not the only copy. Conversion can omit data, so retain the original if you need to recover or revisit it.
- Identify the source edition and world version. Chunker’s supported formats and version ranges can change. Check the current Chunker README before converting.
- Prepare an accepted world file. Chunker accepts a root world folder—the one containing
level.dat—a ZIP archive, or a Bedrock.mcworldarchive. Minecraft can create an.mcworldthrough its export-world feature. - Choose an available Chunker version. The tool is offered as an application for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and as a command-line interface. The CLI requires Java 17 or later, according to the project README.
Getting a world file off a console or mobile device may require a platform-specific export or transfer step. There is no single save-file path that applies to every platform; use current Minecraft Help instructions for your device if you cannot access the world folder or export it.
Convert the world with Chunker
- Open Chunker and select the Java or Bedrock world folder or archive you prepared.
- Choose the destination edition and a target world version supported by the converter. Advanced settings are available, but Microsoft Learn says most worlds need no changes to convert successfully.
- Convert the world and save the output. Conversion time depends on world size; Microsoft Learn says most worlds are ready to download within a few minutes, not that every conversion will finish within that time.
Chunker is a third-party project, not a Mojang or Microsoft product. Microsoft Learn’s Chunker overview explicitly says it is provided by external, third-party contributors and is not a Mojang/Microsoft offering.

Import the converted world into the destination edition
For Bedrock output
Open the generated .mcworld file. Minecraft should import it as a world that you can select from the game.
For Java output
Copy the resulting world folder into Java Edition’s saves directory. Start Java Edition and look for the imported world in the single-player world list.

What carries over—and what may not
Microsoft Learn lists level settings; blocks, biomes, and tile entities; multiple dimensions; containers and items; and in-game maps among the data Chunker can convert. That is not a guarantee that every world element will behave or appear identically in the other edition.
- Entities and player inventories: Microsoft Learn says these cannot currently be converted between editions. The project README lists entities as unsupported except for paintings and item frames.
- Structures: The project README describes structure data, including villages and strongholds, as unsupported or subject to limited conversion.
- Other world features: The cited documentation does not guarantee identical results for every block, modded feature, redstone behavior, or generated structure.
After importing, open the converted copy in-game and inspect the builds, storage, dimensions, entities, inventories, and structures that matter to your world. Do that before treating the conversion as a suitable continuation of a long-running save.

Realms transfers a Bedrock world between devices, not editions
Realms is a different option if your goal is to move a Bedrock world between devices. Minecraft’s Bedrock Realms transfer instructions require an active Realms trial or paid subscription and current game versions on both devices. You upload the world to a Realm slot on the source device, sign in on the destination device, and download that slot as a local copy; the downloaded world appears with “- Copy” appended to its name.
That process does not convert Java worlds to Bedrock or Bedrock worlds to Java. Minecraft describes Java Realms and Bedrock Realms Plus as services associated with their respective editions in its Java or Bedrock Edition comparison.
