Best Nintendo Switch 2 Settings to Check Before You Play

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before your first game, check for system updates, then tune TV output, sleep behavior, battery options, controls, family restrictions, and storage to match how you use the console. There is no single best setup: display choices depend on your TV or monitor, while comfort, downloads, and family settings depend on your needs.

1. Check for system updates first

Open System Settings and look for system software and dock update options. Check for available updates before adjusting other settings; Nintendo’s support overview does not specify a particular current system version. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 System Settings overview.

2. Set TV output to suit your display

When docked, begin with resolution set to Automatic. The console offers 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p (4K), but the useful options depend on the connected television or monitor and the software being played. Use Dock Output Information to check the current resolution, refresh rate, and HDR status before changing a value.

Check HDR and other compatibility options

HDR can be set for all software or only compatible software, and the image appearance can be adjusted. TV settings also include refresh rate, ALLM, RGB range, screen sizing, and TV power matching. These depend on the connected display and software; enabling HDR or a higher refresh rate will not improve every game or setup. Check your display’s documentation for supported color settings and features. Nintendo’s TV resolution and display settings guide describes the available choices.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

3. Choose brightness for handheld play

Adjust screen brightness manually or enable auto-brightness under System Settings. There is no universal ideal level: choose what is comfortable for your eyes and surroundings, and change it as conditions shift. For an adjustment during play, hold the HOME button for at least one second to open Quick Settings, where brightness and auto-brightness are available alongside volume, airplane mode, and sleep controls. Nintendo explains the shortcut in its Quick Settings guide.

4. Match sleep settings to how you play

Handheld/tabletop and TV mode have separate auto-sleep timers. Set each to fit how long you typically pause or step away: a shorter interval avoids leaving the display active, while a longer one may suit longer breaks. The available intervals differ by mode.

TV mode 15 minutes, 1, 2, 3, 6, or 12 hours, or Never

If you want downloads initiated from a PC or smart device to start while the console is asleep, consider keeping the wired connection active in sleep mode; this requires a wired connection. Nintendo says turning this option off can reduce energy use while the console is asleep and connected to the internet. The sleep mode settings guide explains the timers and wired-connection option.

5. Decide whether to show battery percentage or limit charging

In System Settings, you can show the battery percentage on the HOME Menu and optionally stop charging at around 80–90%. Nintendo says the charging limit is intended to help reduce battery-capacity loss over time; it is not a guarantee of a specific battery lifespan or play time. If seeing the remaining percentage is useful, enable that display separately.

6. Review controls and accessibility options you’ll use

System Settings includes button mapping, text-to-speech, controller vibration, mouse sensitivity, audio input, and virtual-surround settings. Review the options relevant to your games and preferences rather than changing everything at once. Adjust button mapping or accessibility features when they make a particular game easier or more comfortable to play.

7. Set family restrictions before children use the console

Parental controls are split among the console, Nintendo’s smart-device app, and Nintendo Account settings. Many restrictions apply system-wide, so set age-rating and communication limits with the youngest user in mind. The app provides play-time limits and GameChat management; Nintendo Account settings cover eShop viewing and purchasing restrictions. Children under 16 need the app to use GameChat. Nintendo’s parental controls overview explains which settings are managed in each place.

8. Check storage and microSD Express support

Open System Settings > Data Management to check system memory and microSD Express card use. Downloaded software data can be moved between them. If you need extra storage for downloaded games, choose a compatible microSD Express card; do not assume a regular microSD card is equivalent. See Nintendo’s System Settings overview for Data Management options.
