The MSI Claw 8 AI+ is an 8-inch Windows 11 gaming handheld built around Intel Core Ultra Series 2 “Lunar Lake” processors. MSI announced it alongside Ryzen AI 300 Series laptops based on AMD’s Zen 5 architecture—often described by the generation codename Strix Point. They target different uses: the Claw puts integrated controls and a compact screen in your hands, while MSI’s 16-inch laptops can pair Ryzen integrated graphics with optional GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs.
What is the MSI Claw 8 AI+?
It is MSI’s Windows 11 Home gaming handheld with an 8-inch touchscreen and integrated game controls. At COMPUTEX 2024, MSI introduced it as a Lunar Lake device, describing upgrades including a larger battery, a second Thunderbolt 4-capable USB-C port, revised LB/RB button feel, and a lighter wall-mounted charger. MSI called it “the most advanced 8-inch gaming handheld in the market”—a company claim, not an independent assessment. MSI’s COMPUTEX 2024 announcement

Is the Claw 8 AI+ a Lunar Lake handheld?
Yes. MSI’s announced and listed configuration uses Intel Core Ultra processors from Series 2, the generation known by the codename Lunar Lake. The Core Ultra 7 258V option pairs with Intel Arc 140V graphics in the product’s listed top configuration. Both are integrated into the handheld platform rather than being a separate laptop-style graphics card.

How does it compare with an MSI Ryzen AI 300 laptop?
“Strix Point” is the codename associated with AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 generation; MSI’s announcement uses the commercial name Ryzen AI 300 Series. MSI introduced the Stealth A16 AI+ and Creator A16 AI+ as 16-inch gaming and creator laptops, and also lists Summit A16 AI+ and Prestige A16 AI+ models using Ryzen AI 300 processors. The distinctions below reflect the categories and options in MSI’s announcement, not a like-for-like performance test.
| Decision point | Claw 8 AI+ | Ryzen AI 300 laptop examples |
|---|---|---|
| Use and portability | 795g handheld with built-in controls and an 8-inch display | 16-inch laptop form factor; external peripherals can be used, but are not required for basic laptop operation |
| Display | One listed 8-inch 1920 × 1200 touchscreen with 48–120Hz VRR | Panel specifications vary by model; MSI’s cited announcement does not give one common panel specification |
| Graphics options | Integrated Intel Arc 140V, up to | Radeon 800M integrated graphics; Stealth A16 AI+ and Creator A16 AI+ offer optional GeForce RTX 40-series graphics |
| Battery reference | 80Wh | MSI lists 82Wh batteries for Summit A16 AI+ and Prestige A16 AI+; that figure is not established here for every Ryzen AI 300 model |
| Expansion | Two Thunderbolt 4 ports, microSD reader, one M.2 2230 storage slot | Laptop expansion depends on the specific model; MSI’s announcement does not provide one shared port or upgrade specification |
The laptop’s optional RTX graphics are the clearest reason to choose that form factor for workloads that benefit from a discrete GPU. The Claw instead integrates its controls, screen, and computer into a device designed to be held. Battery capacities alone do not predict runtime: chassis cooling, power limits, display settings, workload, and battery policies also differ.

What does MSI claim about battery life?
MSI’s current product page advertises “4Hrs+ Gameplay Lifetime” in Endurance Mode and “28Hrs+ 1080p Video Playback.” These are vendor claims, not independent test results; MSI says outcomes depend on test configuration and system settings. Treat them as condition-dependent estimates rather than a promise of runtime for a particular game or brightness setting. MSI Claw 8 AI+ product page
