PS4 Pro can improve gaming on a 1080p TV through supported higher-quality rendering, steadier frame rates, and Supersampling Mode. PSVR games can also benefit when developers add Pro enhancements—but the headset itself remains a 1080p-class display, not a 4K headset. The difference depends on the game.
What PS4 Pro can change on a 1080p TV
A 1080p screen does not make PS4 Pro’s extra capability irrelevant. Sony said that games would run at 1080p, with some capable of higher or more stable frame rates. The exact result is title-dependent: a game may use Pro hardware for a steadier presentation or cleaner image, but not every game has the same enhancements—or a visible improvement.
Sony’s system software 5.50 added Supersampling Mode for PS4 Pro when connected to an HDTV with a resolution of 1080p or less. Supersampling lets a supported game render above the display’s resolution and scale the image down to fit. That can make edges and fine detail look cleaner on a 1080p screen; it does not turn the display into a 4K screen. Sony says the mode cannot be enabled when the console is connected to a 4K display.
How to enable Supersampling Mode
- Connect the PS4 Pro to an HDTV set to 1080p or lower.
- Open Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings.
- Select Supersampling Mode and enable it.
The setting is a general system option, not a guarantee that every game will look different. For the most useful comparison, check whether the game supports PS4 Pro enhancements, then compare the same scene with the mode on and off.

Does PS4 Pro make PSVR better?
It can, when a PSVR game has Pro-specific rendering or performance enhancements. The potential benefit is a game-specific improvement to image quality or steadiness—not a guaranteed upgrade shared by every PSVR title. Sony’s materials do not establish a universal percentage improvement, so claims of a fixed gain across the library would be misleading.
The headset’s display remains the same resolution regardless of which console drives it. Sony specifies one 1920×1080 display shared between the eyes, with a maximum stereoscopic resolution of 960×1080 per eye. PS4 Pro does not make that panel 4K.

Why the processor unit’s 2160p pass-through is different
The PSVR processor unit can pass regular 1080p signals and selected 2160p YUV 4:2:0 signals from a PS4 Pro to a connected TV. That describes video pass-through, not the resolution shown inside the headset. A 2160p signal reaching a compatible TV does not change PSVR’s physical display or its per-eye resolution.
