Yes—if you choose a handheld for compatibility, not on the assumption that it will deliver a particular frame rate or battery life. Steam’s listing says Gears of War: E-Day is “Fully optimized for handheld play on Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally devices.” That is official support for handheld play, but it is not a model-by-model performance test.
What “optimized for handheld play” tells you
The Steam store listing explicitly names Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally devices as optimized handhelds. That makes them supported choices for playing the PC version, but the listing does not promise specific resolution, frame rate, graphics settings, battery runtime, or performance consistency on any one device. Steam’s game listing is the clearest compatibility evidence.
Xbox lists the game for Windows PC and Steam as well as Xbox Series X|S. Early access began October 1, 2026, and the announced worldwide launch date is October 6, 2026; these dates were current as of October 3, 2026. Xbox’s October 1 launch announcement confirmed early access and named Windows PC, Steam, Game Pass Ultimate cloud gaming, and GeForce NOW cloud gaming.
Will it run well on your handheld?
The official compatibility statement cannot answer how smoothly the retail build runs on a particular handheld. Xbox says the PC version uses Unreal Engine 5 and DirectX 12 and supports hardware ray tracing and features including DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR, Unreal Engine TSR, and Intel XeSS on compatible hardware. Those are graphics and scaling features, not evidence of a particular handheld’s frame rate or battery life. Xbox’s PC technology announcement describes support across a broad range of PC hardware, but does not provide comparable handheld test results.

For a purchase decision, look for current tests of the exact handheld running the retail game. Useful results should identify the game version and settings, and report frame-rate stability, resolution, battery runtime, heat, and fan noise. Without those details, a claim that one named handheld runs E-Day at a specific frame rate or lasts a certain number of hours is not established by the official sources cited here.
How to choose a way to play
- Already own a named handheld: The Steam listing supports handheld play on Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally. Check current model-specific retail-build tests before treating compatibility as a guarantee of performance you will enjoy.
- Buying primarily for E-Day: Compare independent tests for the exact model, and weigh performance against screen readability, control comfort, storage, heat, and battery runtime. The official materials do not provide a comparable device-to-device benchmark or storage requirement.
- Prefer not to render the game locally: Xbox lists cloud gaming through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW. Availability depends on the service, your device, region, network, and relevant account or subscription terms; verify those before relying on cloud play. Xbox’s launch announcement confirms the cloud options at a high level.
What to expect from the game on a handheld
Gears of War: E-Day is a third-person shooter and an origin story set fourteen years before the first Gears of War. Xbox describes a solo campaign, online co-op, Horde Siege PvE, and Versus PvP. Its product information says online campaign co-op and other multiplayer features require a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer; two-player split-screen is console-only. A handheld’s support for the game therefore does not mean it offers local split-screen co-op. The Steam listing and Xbox’s launch information describe the platforms and play options.
