Yes: a Framework Laptop 13 Mainboard can serve as the computer core of a custom handheld, and Framework documents using it as a standalone PC. But the board is only the starting point. You still need to design and integrate the display, controls, battery and power path, cooling, storage, memory and enclosure—and there is no controlled evidence that a home-built device will match Steam Deck performance.
What the Framework Mainboard gives you
Framework sells Laptop 13 Mainboards with AMD Ryzen 5 7640U or Ryzen 7 7840U processors, and describes the platform as supporting up to eight CPU cores with Radeon 700M graphics. The Framework Laptop 13 AMD Ryzen 7040 Series Mainboard is the relevant starting point if you want integrated Radeon graphics; confirm the exact board generation and configuration before buying parts.
Framework explicitly supports standalone use. Its guidance says: “All you need to do is insert memory, plug in a USB-C power adapter, and hit the tiny power button on-board, and you’ve got a powered-up computer.” That establishes that the board can operate outside a complete laptop, not that it is already adapted for handheld use.
Parts and design work a handheld needs
| System | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Compute, memory and storage | Framework Laptop 13 Mainboard, compatible SODIMM memory and an M.2 NVMe SSD. |
| Display | A panel, digitizer if wanted, and a compatible connector and electrical interface or adapter. Check fit and interface against the exact panel before building around it. |
| Controls | Joysticks, buttons, triggers and electronics to read and map inputs. Projects use custom PCBs and microcontrollers rather than relying on the mainboard alone. |
| Battery and power | A suitable battery and a USB-C Power Delivery charging and power path designed for that battery. A Framework 13 battery has been used in community builds, but placement and thermal separation matter. |
| Cooling and enclosure | A retained or redesigned heatsink and airflow route, plus a custom enclosure that accommodates the board, battery, display, speakers and controls. |
| Audio and connectivity | Speakers and a plan for access to ports or expansion cards; decide whether docking or removable controls are part of the design. |
Framework’s official repository provides 2D drawings, 3D CAD, connector pinouts and electrical documentation, along with example 3D-printable cases. Use those references to model the parts together, but do not assume that a connector pinout alone makes an arbitrary screen or battery compatible.

Two community builds show different approaches
| Project | Documented design | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| D-Pad | Framework 13 motherboard, battery and speakers; 8.9-inch IPS touchscreen; Joy-Con-style docking and charging; expansion-card slots; RP2040 for additional inputs; 3D-printed enclosure. Its documentation reports Bazzite, a Fedora-based gaming Linux distribution, running on the device. | A larger-screen design with detachable-control inspiration and a separate microcontroller for inputs. |
| FrameDeck | Framework 13 Mainboard and battery, 7-inch 1200p display and digitizer, Wi-Fi, 16GB DDR4 SODIMM, M.2 NVMe SSD, speakers, custom joysticks, buttons, PCBs and 3D-printed parts. | A compact display paired with extensive custom control and electronics work. |
These are examples of particular builds, not universal compatibility recipes or safety certifications. Their component choices show possible directions; your own board revision, panel, battery and mechanical layout still need to be checked.
Thermals and battery placement are the critical constraints
A handheld packs a heat-producing computer and a lithium-ion battery into a small enclosure. A Framework Community discussion warns against putting the battery against the hot Mainboard and notes that the board’s size makes a Steam Deck-sized enclosure difficult. Treat separation, heatsink clearance and airflow as core design requirements, not details to solve after the case is printed.

The Framework board’s footprint also influences the whole device: display size, grip thickness, control spacing and battery capacity compete for the remaining volume. Model the board, battery, speakers, display and controls as one assembly before committing to a final enclosure. Keep the cooling path open and do not compress the battery against the heat source.
How to plan and validate the build
- Choose the exact board. Confirm the Mainboard generation and its memory, storage and display-related interfaces before selecting components.
- Gather mechanical and electrical references. Download Framework’s CAD, drawings and pinouts, then model the board, battery, speakers, display and controls in one enclosure layout.
- Resolve battery location and cooling. Check clearances, heatsink retention and airflow before printing a final case or fixing battery mounts.
- Prototype display and controls on the bench. Verify the selected panel wiring and controller electronics, then build custom PCBs and fabricate the enclosure.
- Validate the assembled device. Install an operating system and test charging, thermals, controller mapping and suspend/resume. Record actual results for your configuration rather than assuming compatibility or performance.
Operating-system support is configuration-dependent. D-Pad’s report that Bazzite runs on its device is a useful precedent, but it does not guarantee that every custom combination will have identical driver, sleep, controller or power behavior.

Will it perform like a Steam Deck?
The Ryzen 7040 board’s integrated Radeon graphics make it a plausible basis for a gaming handheld, but the available project descriptions do not provide controlled Steam Deck-versus-custom-board benchmarks. Performance depends on the exact board, power limits, cooling, game, settings and operating-system configuration. Do not treat the processor model or a successful boot as proof of Steam Deck-equivalent frame rates or battery life.
Before choosing a design, compare expected gaming performance per watt against the enclosure’s cooling capacity and intended battery. Also weigh display size, resolution and refresh rate; total thickness and weight; control ergonomics and repairability; access to expansion cards or a dock; and the fabrication effort and bill of materials. Those trade-offs determine whether the result is a practical portable console or simply a compact custom PC.
