Choose the standard Switch if you mainly play on a TV and want a hybrid console for less, or the Switch Lite if you are certain you want a handheld-only system. The key dividing line is simple: Lite cannot connect to a TV.

Specifications are from Nintendo’s current comparison and technical specifications; battery estimates are from Nintendo Support. Battery life is an estimate, not a guaranteed runtime: the game, settings, and conditions of use affect how long a charge lasts.
Which Switch model should you choose?
Choose the OLED model for a bigger screen and hybrid flexibility
The OLED model is the best fit if you expect to play in handheld mode often but still want to use a TV or set the console up for tabletop play. Its 7-inch OLED screen is larger than the standard Switch’s 6.2-inch LCD, while both built-in displays have the same 1280 × 720 resolution. OLED also includes 64 GB of internal storage rather than 32 GB. It retains TV output up to 1080p and Nintendo’s 4.5–9-hour rated battery range.
Choose the standard Switch for a TV-first setup
The standard Switch is a full hybrid console with TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, plus detachable Joy-Con. It makes sense if you expect to play mainly on a TV and do not need the OLED screen. Check the model number if you are buying used: the revised HAC-001(-01) is rated for 4.5–9 hours, while the earlier HAC-001 is rated for 2.5–6.5 hours. Those ratings come from Nintendo Support’s battery-life guidance.

Choose the Switch Lite only if handheld play is enough
Lite is the smallest and lightest of the three, but it is designed for handheld play only. Nintendo states that “Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV Mode” in its compatibility FAQ. Its controllers are built into the console, so it is not a smaller dockable Switch.
Screen, portability, and battery life
OLED’s advantage is screen size and panel type, not resolution
All three consoles have a 1280 × 720 built-in display. The OLED model’s distinction is its 7-inch OLED panel; the standard Switch uses a 6.2-inch LCD, and Lite uses a 5.5-inch LCD. That makes OLED the most expansive built-in screen, while Lite’s smaller body is easier to carry. The listed weights also depend on whether detachable Joy-Con are attached: the standard and OLED figures above include both console-only and console-with-Joy-Con weights.

Battery estimates depend on the exact standard Switch revision
Nintendo rates the OLED model and revised HAC-001(-01) at approximately 4.5–9 hours, Lite at 3–7 hours, and the early HAC-001 at 2.5–6.5 hours. If battery life matters in a used purchase, identify the standard Switch revision rather than assuming every HAC-001 has the same rating.
Battery capacity also declines with use. Nintendo Support says that after about 800 charge cycles, console battery life will decrease to about 80% compared with a new console (Nintendo Support battery guidance). A used console’s real runtime can therefore be lower than the original model estimate.

TV, tabletop, and handheld play
The standard Switch and OLED model support all three play modes. They can connect to a TV through the dock, be propped up for tabletop play, or be used handheld with their Joy-Con attached. Nintendo lists TV output up to 1080p over HDMI; the built-in display remains 1280 × 720.
Lite supports handheld play, but not TV mode. It can play Switch library games that support handheld mode, as Nintendo explains on its official comparison page. A game that requires a feature or control method unavailable on Lite may require separate wireless Joy-Con and may still not be suitable for standalone handheld use. Check the game’s play-mode and controller requirements before buying.

Controls, game compatibility, and extra controllers
The standard Switch and OLED model have detachable Joy-Con. Lite’s controls are built into the body; in standalone use it does not have HD Rumble or an IR Motion Camera. Pairing wireless Joy-Con can provide some controller functions, but they are an extra purchase, and the Joy-Con need a way to recharge. Nintendo notes that a Joy-Con Charging Grip or another Switch system is needed to recharge them in its compatibility FAQ.
That distinction matters for local multiplayer, motion controls, and games that depend on detached controllers. Before choosing Lite, check whether the games you care about support handheld mode and whether their control features work with its built-in controls. Do not assume that adding Joy-Con turns Lite into a TV console: it still does not support TV mode.

Storage and accessories to account for
The OLED model includes 64 GB of internal storage; the standard Switch and Lite include 32 GB. All three support microSDHC and microSDXC expansion up to 2 TB. A microSD card can help if you download a large library, but the internal-storage difference is useful to consider if you prefer not to add one immediately.
For Lite, factor in the potential cost of separate Joy-Con and a charging solution if you want detached-controller features. For any model, a carrying case and a screen protector should be sized for the exact console. Nintendo cautions that the OLED model’s larger screen can affect compatibility with some Labo accessories and screen protectors; see its model comparison page. Standard Switch and OLED are the only choices here if a docked TV setup is essential.
Check prices and used-console details before buying
There is no single globally current price that applies to every buyer: availability and street prices vary by region and date. Compare local prices for the console and any accessories you actually need. A low-priced Lite may be less economical if your must-have games require detached controllers; a used standard Switch should be checked for its revision and battery condition.
