For newcomers, the Switch 2 editions of OCTOPATH TRAVELER and OCTOPATH TRAVELER II are an easy way to start the series; for people who already own the Switch versions, buying again is difficult to justify. Square Enix says the new editions improve resolution and frame rate, but there is no upgrade pack planned and saves do not transfer between console versions. The publisher has not supplied numeric performance targets, so the size of the improvement is not established.
What is available on Switch 2?
Square Enix announced the Switch 2 editions on July 13, 2026, with a listed release date of October 1, 2026. The games are sold individually digitally and as a digital bundle; a physical Switch 2 bundle is also listed. Square Enix Store North America lists each individual edition from $59.99. Those are publisher-store prices, not a survey of retailers or sale prices, and prices and stock can change.
The publisher describes improved resolution and frame rate compared with the Nintendo Switch releases. Its official materials do not specify a resolution, frame-rate target, or measured comparison, so there is no basis here to call the games 60 fps or to quantify how noticeable the changes are.
Why the games work for newcomers
OCTOPATH TRAVELER
The first game follows eight travelers through Orsterra. Each has a personal story and distinct abilities for use both in and out of battle. Combat is turn-based: players exploit enemy weaknesses to trigger Break, then use Boost to strengthen actions. The party’s separate journeys give the game an anthology-like structure rather than one single-protagonist story.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II
The sequel introduces eight new travelers in Solistia, a separate world shaped by an industrial era. It keeps the series’ job development and Break-and-Boost combat while adding mechanics. Square Enix explicitly describes its world as independent from the original and calls the game an entry for newcomers, so playing the first game is not a prerequisite to understanding the sequel.
Should you buy one game or both?
- Want the clearest newcomer starting point? OCTOPATH TRAVELER II stands on its own, and Square Enix directly positions it as suitable for newcomers.
- Prefer to begin with the series’ original setup? Start with OCTOPATH TRAVELER and its eight journeys across Orsterra.
- Interested in both worlds? Consider the digital bundle, checking your regional store for its current price. The individual North American publisher-store listings start at $59.99 each; that figure does not establish the bundle’s price.
Square Enix reported that the series had shipped and sold more than 6 million copies worldwide as of July 13, 2026. That is the publisher’s figure, not an independent sales estimate.

Are the Switch 2 editions worth buying if you own the Switch versions?
Usually, no—not on the information Square Enix has published. The publisher says it has no plans for an upgrade pack, and saves are incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 editions. That means an existing owner would be buying the game again, without carrying over a save.
Buying again may make sense if you value the stated resolution and frame-rate improvements enough to pay for another copy. But because the official materials provide no numeric targets or independent measurements, the performance difference cannot be weighed more precisely from the available specifications.

What to check before choosing a physical copy
Physical format is region-specific. The official Square Enix e-STORE Japan listing for the Switch 2 bundle identifies it as a key card: the full game downloads on first play, requiring an internet connection and at least 11 GB of free space. That description applies to the Japan listing; do not assume a physical bundle sold in another region uses the same format. Check the local retailer’s listing before purchasing.
