Yes. Sony’s PlayStation bug bounty program opened publicly on HackerOne on June 24, 2020. Sony announced critical PlayStation 4 (PS4) vulnerability bounties starting at $50,000 at launch. That is a historical starting figure—not a statement of the current maximum or a guaranteed payout. The launch announcement named PS4 and PlayStation Network (PSN); a later policy record also lists PS5, operating systems and accessories, but check the live HackerOne policy before testing because scope and reward terms can change.

What Sony announced

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) opened the PlayStation Bug Bounty Program to the public through HackerOne on June 24, 2020. It had previously operated privately with selected researchers. Geoff Norton, then Senior Director of Software Engineering at PlayStation, said: “We believe that through working with the security research community we can deliver a safer place to play.” Sony’s launch announcement invited security researchers, gamers and others to test PlayStation security.

What is in scope?

The launch announcement named the PS4 system and PSN. A later policy record lists PS4 and PS5 systems, their operating systems, accessories and PSN, and says current released or beta system software is accepted. That record is a secondary mirror, not the authoritative live program policy; confirm the current eligible targets and versions on PlayStation’s HackerOne program page before doing any testing.

In particular, do not assume every PlayStation-related website, service, device or software version is eligible just because it is associated with Sony or PlayStation. Scope is whatever the current program policy explicitly authorizes.

Does PlayStation pay for PS4 or PS5 security bugs?

Sony’s 2020 launch announcement said critical PS4 vulnerabilities had bounties starting at $50,000. That was a launch-era figure for critical PS4 bugs, not a current payout schedule or a maximum. The announcement did not establish an equivalent PS5 starting amount. At launch, TechCrunch reported that the HackerOne page showed more than $170,000 paid to researchers and an average bounty of around $400; those figures describe the program at that time and do not predict an individual report’s reward.

Whether a report qualifies for payment, and how much it may receive, depends on the current policy, the finding’s severity and quality, and Sony’s assessment. HackerOne’s guidance notes that rewards are discretionary and governed by each program’s policy. Read the live PlayStation policy for current eligibility and reward terms before submitting.

How to submit a PlayStation bug bounty report

  1. Read the live policy first. Open PlayStation’s HackerOne program page and confirm that the affected target and software version are in scope, along with the current testing rules and reward terms.
  2. Test only within the authorization. Keep testing controlled and minimize impact. Do not access, expose or include other people’s personal data.
  3. Document a reproducible finding. Submit clear steps to reproduce the issue, the affected target and version, the observed behavior, and enough technical detail for Sony to verify the security impact. Avoid including third-party personal data in the report.
  4. Submit through HackerOne. Use the PlayStation program’s submission process and follow any disclosure restrictions in its current policy. Do not publish details or disclose the vulnerability elsewhere unless the policy or Sony’s authorization permits it.
  5. Allow time for follow-up. Sony’s Secure@Sony page says reporters can expect a response within five business days and a status update within 30 business days. These are stated targets, not a guarantee of resolution or payment within those periods.

Can anyone participate?

The program was publicly opened to the security research community, gamers and others, rather than remaining limited to Sony’s privately selected researchers. Public access does not mean unrestricted testing: participants still need to comply with the live program’s scope, rules and disclosure requirements. The current policy is the authority on who may participate and what conduct is permitted.
