The ally-turned-villain is Maxwell Lord. In the 2005 Sacrifice storyline, he mind-controlled Superman and forced Wonder Woman to make a decision that reshaped how the world—and Diana herself—saw her.
Who is Maxwell Lord?
Lord first entered this story as a businessman who attached himself to the Justice League International as its press liaison. He helped shape events that established the League as an international team, but his motives and methods became increasingly manipulative. In later stories, he became an outright adversary, pursuing control over the metahuman community. DC’s retrospective on Maxwell Lord traces that shift from League associate to villain.
What happened in Wonder Woman #219?
In the 2005 Sacrifice arc, Lord controlled Superman and made him attack his allies. Wonder Woman #219, written by Greg Rucka and released July 27, 2005, concludes the four-part story. DC’s issue description calls it the arc’s “stunning conclusion” as Superman turns his attention toward an unexpected enemy.
DC’s retrospective on Wonder Woman’s battles frames Diana’s choice starkly: killing Lord was the only way available to free Superman. She killed him, stopping the immediate threat but creating consequences that outlasted the confrontation.

Why did the killing change Diana’s trajectory?
The act damaged Diana’s public image, strained her relationships with Superman and Batman, and forced her to question her mission. It was both a personal moral crisis and a political turning point: the world had to reckon with its most powerful heroine killing a man, even when doing so saved Superman.
DC made that fallout the starting point of the next Wonder Woman series. The official description for Wonder Woman #1 (2006) begins: “One year after the execution of Maxwell Lord and the earth-shattering events of INFINITE CRISIS, the DCU is still struggling to come to terms with its most powerful heroine.” It asks whether Diana is “a martyr or a murderer.”

Has Maxwell Lord appeared in the Absolute Universe?
As of ComicBook.com’s October 2, 2026 report, Lord had not appeared in the Absolute Universe. That is a time-bounded account, not a guarantee about later issues. DC’s official listing for Absolute Wonder Woman #1 confirms the series’ October 23, 2024 release and its creative team—writer Kelly Thompson and artist Hayden Sherman—but it is not a complete index of every character who has appeared across the line.
