Yes—AI upscaling is coming to the base PlayStation 5. Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on October 1, 2026, with support beginning in patched versions of Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. QSSR is a new upscaling tier for PS5, not a promise that base-console games will match PS5 Pro image quality or performance.
What QSSR does on PS5
QSSR is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s AI-guided upscaling technology for the base PS5. Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution-looking image from game-rendered image data; Sony says QSSR is designed to improve detail and image stability. How Sony says it was built
Sony says QSSR grew out of Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. It identifies two design choices: a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation hand-tuned to maximize performance on PS5. Sony does not publish the model’s technical details or hardware-utilization figures, so those descriptions do not establish how QSSR compares quantitatively with other upscalers.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named two launch titles. Both were receiving patches on the announcement day, October 1, 2026, and QSSR is offered as an additional graphics option rather than an automatic feature in every game.

Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but has not published a complete future compatibility list or schedule. For a specific game, check its current patch notes and in-game graphics settings; Sony’s announcement does not establish support beyond the two titles it named.
What the developers report
Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine, bringing out extra detail in locations including Madripoor and Shinjuku. Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, said QSSR resolves fine detail in characters and environments with temporal stability that had not previously been possible on PS5. These are developers’ descriptions of their own games, not measurements across all PS5 titles.

QSSR versus PS5 Pro PSSR
QSSR and PSSR are related but distinct technologies for different consoles. Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier for base PS5, while saying PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro. The announcement does not say QSSR is technically identical to PSSR or that it produces equivalent results.

What is not yet known about QSSR results
Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability, but its announcement provides no percentage improvement, frame-rate gain or cost, output resolution target, or side-by-side result against PSSR. The named developers’ comments speak to their respective games and do not establish how QSSR will perform across future titles. To compare QSSR with PSSR meaningfully, evidence needs to be specific to the same game and patch, the graphics modes offered, image detail, temporal stability, output resolution, and frame rate.
Accordingly, “PS5 Pro-style” describes the arrival of AI upscaling on the base console; it should not be read as evidence of PS5 Pro parity. Sony has not given a rollout date for other games, and support depends on developers adding the option to a title.
