Yes. You can use the Steam Mobile app—or a web browser—to tell your home PC or Mac to download a game remotely. The Steam client must be running and signed in on that computer. The files download to the computer, not to your phone.

What you need before starting a remote download

  • A PC or Mac with the Steam client running and signed in to your Steam account.
  • The same Steam account signed in on your phone’s Steam Mobile app or in a web browser.
  • A supported phone OS if you are using the app: Steam lists Android 7.0 or later and iOS 15.1 or later on its Steam Mobile page.

Steam recommends leaving the client running on your own private, secured computer. If that computer is off, signed out, or not running Steam, it cannot receive the installation command.

Start the download from Steam Mobile

  1. On your home PC or Mac, open Steam and sign in. Leave the client running.
  2. On your phone, open Steam Mobile and sign in to the same account.
  3. Open your Games list from the profile or activity area.
  4. Select the game you want and tap Install.
  5. Refresh the Games list to check its installation status. The Steam client on your computer downloads the game files.

Steam Support describes the feature as available “from any web browser or from the Steam Mobile app” when the Steam application is left running on a PC or Mac: Steam Remote Downloads support.

Use a browser instead of the mobile app

Remote Downloads also work through a web browser, so installing Steam Mobile is not required. Sign in to your Steam account, open the Games list, select the title, and choose Install. As with the app, the target computer must have Steam running and signed in; the browser only sends the request and displays status.

Where the game downloads

The phone or browser acts as a remote control. Steam downloads the game to the PC or Mac running the Steam client, using that computer’s available storage and connection. It does not download a PC game to the phone. When you return to the computer, the game should be ready to play if the installation has finished.

Check or manage downloads from another device

Valve’s April 28, 2026 Steam client update added multi-device download management, according to PC Gamer’s April 29, 2026 report. This lets users check or adjust a download on another machine on the network. It is a related client feature; starting a remote download from outside the home still depends on the target computer running Steam and being signed in.

If the remote install does not start

  • Confirm the target computer is on and online. Steam must be running there, not merely installed.
  • Check the account. The browser or app and the target client need to be signed in to the same Steam account.
  • Check app compatibility. Steam lists Android 7.0 and iOS 15.1 as the mobile app’s minimum operating-system versions.
  • Refresh the Games list. Status may need to be refreshed to show the installation progress.

Steam Link is not the download tool: it is a separate Remote Play app for streaming games. Use Steam Mobile or a browser for Remote Downloads.
