No: AMD’s 2020 roadmap did not identify Zen 3 as a 5nm architecture. It said Zen 3 processors were planned for late 2020, while the 5nm target belonged to Zen 4. Separately, AMD identified RDNA 2 as the graphics architecture behind its next-generation Radeon cards and the graphics foundation for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Xbox Series X uses a Zen 2 CPU—not Zen 3.
What AMD’s 2020 roadmap said about Zen 3 and 5nm
At its Financial Analyst Day on March 5, 2020, AMD said it planned to introduce the first processors based on its next-generation Zen 3 core in late 2020. In the same presentation, AMD said Zen 4 was in design and targeted to use advanced 5nm process technology. Those were separate roadmap statements: the 5nm target was attached to Zen 4, not Zen 3.
AMD’s Q3 2020 results subsequently named Ryzen 5000 desktop processors featuring Zen 3. In a 2022 roadmap update, AMD described Zen 4 as the “world’s first high-performance 5nm x86 CPU generation.” That later statement supports the distinction in the 2020 roadmap: Zen 3 and the 5nm Zen 4 target were different CPU generations.
| Generation or product | What AMD’s cited materials said | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Zen 3 | First processors planned for late 2020; Ryzen 5000 desktop processors were identified as featuring Zen 3. AMD Financial Analyst Day, March 5, 2020, and AMD Q3 2020 results. | The roadmap did not assign Zen 3 the 5nm target. |
| Zen 4 | In design and targeted for advanced 5nm technology in March 2020; described as the first high-performance 5nm x86 CPU generation in AMD’s 2022 update. | The 5nm statement concerned Zen 4. |
| Zen 5 | Included on a 2024 plan in AMD’s 2022 roadmap update. | This was a plan stated in 2022, not a current schedule or status update. |
The node claim needs the same care as the architecture claim: a roadmap target is not a measurement of a retail processor. The cited statements establish AMD’s intended 5nm generation and roadmap timing; they do not provide a process-node specification for every Zen 3 product.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What RDNA 2 meant for Radeon graphics
AMD’s March 2020 roadmap planned the first RDNA 2 products for late that year and highlighted hardware ray tracing and variable-rate shading. AMD also set a target of 50% better performance per watt than first-generation RDNA. That figure was a company target, not an independently tested result.
AMD’s Q3 2020 results identified Radeon RX 6000 as its high-end RDNA 2 graphics launch. Radeon RX 6000 was the discrete graphics-card line; console implementations used semi-custom system-on-chips. Sharing an architecture does not make a desktop card and a console GPU the same product or guarantee identical clocks, configuration, or performance.

Which architectures are in PS5 and Xbox Series X?
Both consoles use AMD semi-custom hardware, and AMD’s 2021 annual filing describes RDNA 2 as the graphics foundation for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X. The CPU generation is a separate question from the GPU architecture: Xbox Series X pairs Zen 2 CPU cores with a custom RDNA 2 GPU.
Xbox Series X specifications
Microsoft’s Xbox Wire specifications, published March 16, 2020, list an 8-core custom Zen 2 CPU at 3.8 GHz, or 3.6 GHz with simultaneous multithreading (SMT). Its custom RDNA 2 GPU is specified at 12 TFLOPS, with 52 compute units running at 1.825 GHz. These are Xbox Series X specifications, not generic Zen 2 or RDNA 2 figures.

PlayStation 5 and the limits of the comparison
AMD’s Q2 2020 results said initial production had begun on next-generation SoCs for Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X. AMD’s 2021 filing later confirmed that it developed the semi-custom SoCs and identified RDNA 2 as the graphics foundation for both console families. The cited material establishes PS5’s AMD semi-custom and RDNA 2 lineage, but does not provide PS5 CPU or GPU clocks or compute-unit figures here. Do not transfer Xbox Series X’s published specifications to PS5.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to keep the roadmap and console claims straight
- Architecture is not a process node: Zen 3 and Zen 4 name CPU generations; 5nm is the process target AMD attached to Zen 4 in its 2020 roadmap.
- CPU and GPU are different parts: Zen describes the CPU core family; RDNA 2 describes the graphics architecture.
- Console implementations are customized: PS5 and Xbox Series X share an RDNA 2 graphics foundation and AMD semi-custom lineage, but that does not mean their complete SoCs or specifications are identical.
- A roadmap target is not a benchmark: AMD’s 50% performance-per-watt figure was a target versus first-generation RDNA, not a measured outcome established by the cited roadmap.
