Ken Kutaragi sagt nicht, dass sich Spiele technisch nicht weiterentwickelt hätten. Seine Kritik: Spiele seien größer und grafisch besser geworden, doch die Art, wie Inhalte entstehen, habe sich seit dem ursprünglichen PlayStation-Projekt kaum verändert. Das ist seine persönliche Einschätzung – kein unabhängig belegter Befund über die gesamte Branche. Zugleich erwartet der frühere PlayStation-Projektleiter weitere Durchbrüche.
Was Ken Kutaragi an heutigen Spielen kritisiert
Bei der Eröffnungsfeier des Creative Entertainment Research and Education Center (CEREC) an der University of Electro-Communications in Tokio stellte Kutaragi am 29. September 2026 technischen Fortschritt und kreative Entwicklung einander gegenüber. Laut dem Bericht von 4Gamer seien Spiele im Maßstab gewachsen und ihre Grafik habe sich weiterentwickelt. Die grundlegende Art der Inhaltsproduktion habe sich seit dem von ihm geleiteten ursprünglichen PlayStation-Projekt jedoch kaum verändert.
Der Gegensatz ist wichtig: Kutaragi spricht von einer aus seiner Sicht zu geringen Veränderung bei Inhalten und ihrer Herstellung – nicht von Stillstand bei Grafik, Hardware oder Spielgröße. Der Veranstaltungsbericht nennt keine konkreten heutigen Spiele als Belege und enthält kein vollständiges Transkript. Seine Aussage sollte deshalb als Urteil eines Branchenveteranen verstanden werden, nicht als Messung der kreativen Entwicklung aller Spiele.
Warum der Vergleich mit der ersten PlayStation eine Rolle spielt
Kutaragi bezog seine Einschätzung auf ein Projekt, bei dem neue technische Möglichkeiten ein zentrales Ziel waren. In einem historischen Interview von 2024 beschreibt Teiji Yutaka, ein Mitwirkender an der Entwicklung der ersten PlayStation, Kutaragi als Projektleiter, der eine vollständig computergenerierte Welt ins Gaming bringen wollte. Zu den Herausforderungen zählten Echtzeitgrafik und die Integration von Geometrieberechnungen in einen erschwinglichen Halbleiterchip, wie Sony Interactive Entertainment berichtet.

Damit erklärt sich der Maßstab hinter Kutaragis Rückblick: Zur PlayStation-Zeit ging es auch darum, technische Grenzen zu verschieben und damit neue Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten zu schaffen. Das historische Beispiel macht seine Perspektive verständlicher, beweist aber nicht, dass heutige Spiele kreativ stagnieren.
Sieht Kutaragi die Spielebranche am Ende ihrer Entwicklung?
Nein. Kutaragi beschrieb die Branche laut 4Gamer als noch nicht ausgereift und offen für einen großen Durchbruch. Seine Kritik ist also nicht bloß ein Abgesang auf moderne Spiele: Er verbindet sie mit der Erwartung, dass sich die Branche erneut grundlegend weiterentwickeln kann.

Bei der Veranstaltung bezifferte er das Geschäft mit Spielesoftware auf rund 30 Billionen Yen und bezeichnete es als größtes Feld im Content-Bereich. 4Gamer nennt für diese Bühnenaussage weder eine Berechnungsmethode noch eine genaue geografische Abgrenzung. Die Zahl ist daher als Kutaragis Größenordnung zu verstehen, nicht als unabhängig geprüfte Marktstatistik.
Sein Rat: neugierig bleiben und Technologie selbst gestalten
Kutaragi forderte Studierende und Branchenangehörige auf, neue Technologien nicht nur zu übernehmen, sondern selbst zu schaffen – so wie es seiner Ansicht nach zur PlayStation-Zeit geschah. Seine Warnung vor Selbstzufriedenheit lässt sich sinngemäß übersetzen: „Sobald man die Neugier verliert und denkt: Das ist wohl schon alles, ist es vorbei.“ Der japanische Veranstaltungsbericht protokolliert die Aussage; die deutsche Formulierung ist eine Übersetzung, kein deutscher Originalwortlaut. AUTOMATON WEST veröffentlichte ebenfalls eine englische Übersetzung.

Auch über KI sprach Kutaragi bei der Diskussion: Menschen sollten sie selbstbestimmt einsetzen, statt sich von ihr steuern zu lassen. Er bezeichnete den gegenwärtigen Stand als frühe Entwicklungsphase und betonte, dass Menschen und KI gemeinsam weiterlernen müssten. Das sind seine Einschätzungen, keine feststehenden Prognosen über den weiteren Verlauf der Technologie.

Kutaragis zentrale Unterscheidung ist zwischen technischer Verbesserung und Veränderung der kreativen Methoden. Dass Spiele aufwendiger und visuell leistungsfähiger werden, beantwortet für ihn nicht automatisch die Frage, ob sich auch die Inhalte oder ihre Herstellung grundlegend erneuern.

Die Aussage allein entscheidet jedoch nicht, ob die Branche insgesamt stagniert: Der Veranstaltungsbericht liefert weder eine systematische Untersuchung noch Beispiele, anhand derer sich Kutaragis These prüfen ließe. CEREC, das Zentrum der University of Electro-Communications, soll Spiele und Unterhaltung aus ingenieurwissenschaftlicher, naturwissenschaftlicher und sozialwissenschaftlicher Perspektive erforschen und Bildungsangebote sowie Kooperationen mit Unternehmen, Kommunen und akademischen Einrichtungen fördern; die Universität beschreibt seine Ausrichtung auf ihrer offiziellen Website.
