To livestream pre-recorded videos on YouTube around the clock, send a looping playlist to YouTube Live through an encoder such as OBS, or use a cloud playout service so a computer does not have to stay on. First enable live streaming for your channel, then connect the encoder with a YouTube stream key, configure the video and audio, and verify stream health before leaving it running.

How do I livestream pre-recorded videos on YouTube 24/7?

YouTube Live receives a live feed from an encoder; the encoder can play a recording or playlist rather than a camera. There are two practical setups:

  • Local: OBS plays and loops media on a computer you maintain. This offers direct control and may use equipment you already own.
  • Cloud: A service hosts the playback and sends it to YouTube, avoiding a dedicated streaming PC at home. YouTube’s verified encoder directory identifies Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams and also lists Upstream.so as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video. The directory does not establish Upstream.so’s prerecorded playlist controls, so confirm that capability with the provider.

For a hardware alternative, YouTube describes the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream feature as scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. That description does not establish all the controls needed for unattended, continuously looping operation.

Check channel eligibility and prepare the stream

  1. Enable YouTube Live. YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned start.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key as a password: YouTube says it is the encoder’s address and password. Keep it private and reset it if exposed.
  3. Prepare cleared media. Check that you have the necessary rights to every video and audio track for the intended use and territory. Permission to make a recording does not necessarily establish permission to transmit it live.
  4. Choose the operating model. Use OBS if you can keep the computer, network, media, and encoder process running and monitored. Choose cloud playout if you do not want a dedicated PC operating at home; check the provider’s playlist, restart, and scheduling controls before committing.

Set up a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Add the media. In OBS, add a Media Source for one video, or a VLC Video Source for a playlist. VLC must be installed for the VLC source. Add multiple clips if you want a longer rotation before viewers see the same material again.
  2. Enable the loop. In the VLC Video Source properties, turn on Loop Playlist. OBS documents this setting as restarting the source after it runs out of media files. Confirm the playlist reaches its end and starts again during a test.
  3. Set output video and audio. Pick a resolution and frame rate your computer can encode reliably and your upload connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance below as a starting point, not as a guarantee that a particular connection is sufficient.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. Enter the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room in the encoder’s streaming settings. Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends it as the secure extension to RTMP.
  5. Test and monitor. Start with representative movement and audio, inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and correct dropped frames, buffering, missing audio, or an incorrect aspect ratio before relying on the stream unattended.
  6. Plan the archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need an automatic archive, schedule sessions below 12 hours; the guidance does not promise an archive for longer broadcasts.

YouTube Live encoder settings to check

YouTube’s published guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval, with no more than 4 seconds. Its H.264 table gives these examples:

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 values for the stated resolutions and frame rates, not a universal upload-speed target. Leave headroom for network variation and other household or office traffic; test the actual connection and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt stream data to Google’s servers.

Copyright, live interruptions, and YouTube rules

A 24/7 stream is still subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube’s live-stream terms require creators to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation on Google services, including music rights. YouTube scans live feeds for third-party matches and may interrupt or terminate a stream. If you have a license for third-party material, YouTube instructs you to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Resolve that before starting a long-running broadcast; a license does not itself prevent an automated match.

Local OBS or cloud playout?

Consideration Local encoder (OBS) Cloud playout
Where playback runs On a computer you control. On the provider’s cloud infrastructure. YouTube’s encoder directory identifies Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded streaming without a dedicated PC.
Playlist controls OBS supports a looping VLC playlist. Confirm playlist, restart, and schedule controls with the provider; YouTube’s directory is a summary, not a full feature manual.
What you maintain The computer, files, network connection, and encoder process. The provider hosts the stream process; you still manage content permissions and YouTube stream configuration.
Cost and plan limits No hardware cost or computer specification is established by the cited documentation. Current pricing and plan limits for Gyre and Upstream.so are not established by the cited documentation.
Best fit A creator with a suitable computer who wants direct control and can keep it running. A creator who prioritizes continuous operation without a dedicated streaming PC.

If you lack a suitable always-on computer, a mini PC for OBS livestreaming is one possible local route, but an existing computer or a cloud service may make a purchase unnecessary.

Troubleshooting a 24/7 prerecorded stream

  • You cannot start a live broadcast: Check channel verification, restrictions in the past 90 days, and whether first-time live enablement has completed. YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • The encoder will not connect: Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS against the Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder.
  • The playlist stops at the end: Confirm that the VLC Video Source is being used for the playlist and that Loop Playlist is enabled. Test the end-of-playlist transition before leaving the broadcast running.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or viewers see buffering: Verify the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against the connection’s sustained upload capacity. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and run a representative test while monitoring Live Control Room.
  • The stream is interrupted for a rights match: Review the matched video or audio and your permissions. For licensed third-party material, contact the rights owner about allowlisting your channel through Content ID.
  • You need a saved replay: Keep each broadcast under 12 hours for YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior. Do not assume a longer stream will be archived automatically.
