How to Loop Recorded Lectures on a YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To repeat a recorded lecture during a YouTube Live broadcast, loop the video in streaming software such as OBS Studio and send that feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s viewer-side Loop button only repeats playback for an individual viewer; it does not turn a recording into a live broadcast.

How lecture looping works on YouTube Live

YouTube Live needs an encoder to send video to the platform. YouTube describes an encoder as a tool that converts video into a digital format for streaming. In this setup, OBS loops the lecture file and sends the repeating feed to YouTube. The live stream is what viewers watch; their player’s Loop control does not create or control that broadcast.

What to prepare

  • A YouTube channel cleared to live stream. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance; enable it well before the lecture is due to air.
  • OBS Studio installed on a computer that can remain on and connected while streaming.
  • The lecture video saved locally, or VLC installed if you plan to use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist.
  • The stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • Permission to rebroadcast the recording and all its contents, including slides, clips, music, and contributions from other people.

Set up a single lecture to repeat in OBS

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, confirm the channel can stream. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow time for activation, which may take up to 24 hours.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule it. Use the settings appropriate to your event and audience.
  3. Add the lecture in OBS. Create a scene, add a Media Source, and select the local lecture file. OBS documentation lists formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.
  4. Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS will restart the file when playback finishes. If the source’s other playback settings are visible, verify them for your intended behavior before the test.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if it is exposed.
  6. Start the encoder output. Start streaming in OBS. YouTube creates the watch page and receives the feed when content is being sent. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and use its Go live control when the selected settings require it.
  7. Preview before inviting viewers. Check the picture, audio, stream health, watch-page access, and access on a phone. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream; a short private or unlisted test is a practical way to do that before a public event.
  8. End the broadcast cleanly. End the stream in YouTube Studio and stop OBS’s output. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that statement guarantees how a longer stream will be handled.

Loop a playlist of lectures instead

For a sequence of recordings, add OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source to appear. Check the playlist order and each file’s audio and picture in a test before using it for an event. A playlist lets the lectures play in sequence; it does not remove the need to send the encoder feed to YouTube.

Choose between a computer and a hardware encoder

Approach When it fits Important qualification
OBS Studio on a computer Useful when you have a computer available and want to loop a local file or playlist, or manage scenes. The computer and connection need to remain available while OBS sends the stream. OBS documents Media Source looping and VLC Video playlist looping.
AJA HELO Plus YouTube lists this hardware encoder and describes PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. The cited YouTube page does not confirm indefinite repeat behavior, so do not assume it will loop lectures continuously.

YouTube’s encoder guidance describes the encoder workflow and names hardware options at its encoder help page. Choose a device based on the specific playback features it documents, rather than assuming every prerecorded-media encoder can loop indefinitely.

Copyright and access checks

You are responsible for having the rights needed to use the live content on Google’s services, including applicable music licensing rights. A lecture may contain material beyond the lecturer’s own narration: check permission for embedded music, video clips, images, slides, and guest contributions before rebroadcasting. YouTube’s live-stream terms set out this responsibility in the platform terms.

  • Confirm that the recording may be rebroadcast to your intended audience and territory.
  • Check whether third-party clips, music, or other material have separate licensing requirements.
  • Make sure the watch page is accessible to the intended viewers, including on mobile, during the test.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The lecture plays locally, but no live feed reaches YouTube. OBS is not sending output, or the stream URL or key is missing or incorrect. Check the stream settings in OBS against YouTube Studio, then start the encoder output and confirm that Live Control Room receives a preview.
The lecture ends and does not restart. The Media Source’s Loop setting is off, or the wrong source type is being used. Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist.
VLC Video is unavailable in OBS. VLC is not installed. Install VLC, then check whether VLC Video is available as a source in OBS.
Viewers can’t access the watch page. The stream’s access settings or broadcast setup may not match the intended audience. Check the stream’s visibility and test the watch page from a viewer’s device before the event.
Audio, picture, or stream health is wrong. A source, file, or stream setting may not behave as expected. Preview the feed in Live Control Room, inspect the lecture’s sound and image, and monitor stream quality during a test.
The first live stream is not available yet. Channel activation may still be processing. Enable live streaming ahead of time; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
