Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos says the company expects to remain in games and sees mobile gaming as a gateway to cloud gaming on televisions. His “post-console world” remark describes an opportunity Netflix wants to pursue—not evidence that dedicated consoles are disappearing. Netflix has already announced TV games that use a phone as the controller, but it has not set out a detailed future catalog or a current device-by-device compatibility list.
What Sarandos said about Netflix and cloud gaming
At Bloomberg’s Screentime event, Sarandos was asked whether Netflix would still be involved in games five years later. Kotaku reported on October 2, 2026, that he said he thought so, describing mobile games as a “gateway to cloud gaming.” He said Netflix was more interested in playing games on a TV with a phone as the remote, and saw opportunities for television gaming in what he called a “post-console world.”
Kotaku also reported that Sarandos cited extending Netflix intellectual property, strengthening the brand, and giving subscribers the option to game on the television instead of watching. The event transcript was not independently located, so his wording here is attributed to Kotaku’s account of the remarks. Kotaku’s report
“I think so. Really, what’s exciting right now, and the mobile gaming was a gateway to cloud gaming, we were much more interested in what you could do on the TV using your phone as a remote. And remember, in a kind of post-console world, there’s going to be all kinds of opportunities for gaming on the television.

And that we want to be, you know, early investors in that. I like [gaming] for IP extension. I certainly like it for brand value for people who want to spend time on that screen gaming instead of watching, that we have an option for them.”
What “post-console world” does—and does not—mean
Sarandos used the phrase to frame the potential for games on televisions, not to announce that consoles are going away or that Netflix intends to replace them. His remarks do not establish a console decline, cloud-gaming adoption rate, or market-size forecast. The practical point is narrower: Netflix sees TV gaming as another way to use the screen and wants to invest early in that opportunity.

He also described Netflix’s growth as primarily organic and said it would pursue opportunities that complement its business, including games. The reported remarks did not announce a plan to buy a major game publisher; they also do not amount to a promise that Netflix will never acquire a game company. Kotaku’s report
Netflix has announced TV games controlled with a phone
There is a product example behind the strategy. Netflix announced FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition for Netflix Games on June 4, 2026, with availability set for June 11. The announced TV setup uses the television as the display and a phone as the controller; Netflix said up to four players could join and that the game was included with Netflix membership. The announcement said TV games were available in 20 countries at that time. These are dated statements, not a guarantee of current availability in every country or on every device. The phone-controller arrangement is distinct from the broader strategic phrase “cloud gaming”: the announcement establishes that Netflix is bringing games to TV screens with phone controls, but it does not provide a detailed account of the underlying streaming technology or promise a particular catalog beyond the announced title. Sarandos’s comments indicate a direction of interest, not a rollout schedule.

Netflix’s August 2023 announcement about a limited TV-game streaming test named these initial partner device families: Amazon Fire TV streaming media players, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, Nvidia Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung Smart TVs, Xfinity 4K devices, and Xumo devices and TVs. Netflix recorded subsequent test rollouts in additional countries, most recently Brazil in April 2026. That historical list is not a current, model-by-model support matrix. For example, Amazon Fire TV streaming media players were among the families named for the test, but that does not mean every Fire TV model currently supports Netflix TV games.
