WeightForge is a Blender add-on that brings weight transfer, cleanup, influence limits, protective masks and deformation diagnostics together in a rigging workflow. Blender already includes weight-paint brushes and vertex-group editing tools, so the add-on’s distinction is its collection of controls in one place—not making weight painting possible in Blender.
What WeightForge adds
According to the WeightForge user guide and marketplace listing, the add-on adds a WeightForge tab to the 3D Viewport’s N-Panel and two pie menus available in Weight Paint mode. Its tools cover several stages of preparing and checking weights:
- Binding: choose Blender’s classic heat-map binding, a distance-and-normal method, or a heat-map method with distance fallback.
- Transfer: move weights between meshes using proximity, normal-aware, topology or hybrid approaches. An option is intended to preserve target regions whose weights are already satisfactory.
- Cleanup and limits: prune near-zero weights, normalize, smooth, set influence limits and remove distant bone influence.
- Inspection: display a live deformation heatmap to help identify areas to examine while adjusting a rig.
- Rig and export utilities: mirror left/right groups, clean group names, remove empty groups, create joint gradients, bind hard-surface parts rigidly or by hierarchy, redirect Rigify weights and produce an export-readiness report.
These are features described by the vendor, not independently verified results. The guide’s framing is: “Treat weight painting like a deformation solver, not guesswork.”
How the workflow fits together
The vendor’s suggested sequence is to bind a mesh (or use a rig add-on’s binding), transfer weights to clothing or armor when needed, clean them up, and limit influences for game export. Then pose a bone to inspect deformation, protect regions that are already working, and finish adjustments by hand. The protective mask is intended to keep settled areas from being changed while other regions are edited.

For Auto-Rig Pro, the guide says WeightForge detects the rig but does not automatically remap its weights, because naming conventions can vary. Do not assume that rig detection means automatic correction.
What Blender already provides
Blender’s manual describes weight painting as editing vertex groups, commonly to control how bones influence a rigged mesh. Normalized weights constrain group values in a way that affects deformation. Blender also has paint brushes, linear and radial gradients, weight sampling, smoothing and weight-setting or sampling operations; vertex groups can be locked. That built-in toolkit may be enough if you mainly paint and adjust groups on one mesh. WeightForge is more relevant when the job also involves transferring weights across meshes, protecting finished regions, pruning and limiting influences, or using the add-on’s deformation and export checks. It bundles those operations; the documentation does not establish that it produces better deformation or saves a measurable amount of time.
Check compatibility and install
The vendor documentation says WeightForge requires Blender 4.2 and describes installation from a ZIP via Preferences → Get Extensions → Install from Disk. The marketplace listing states compatibility with Blender 4.2–5.2. Requirements and supported versions can change, so check the current listing and instructions before installing, especially if you use a version outside that stated range.

Blender’s weight-paint brushes also vary by version. In Blender 5.3 release notes, the default brush changed to “Add Weight” and the existing “Paint” brush was renamed “Set Weight”; those labels should not be assumed for every Blender release.

- Consider WeightForge if you regularly transfer weights to garments or armor, need a bundled cleanup and influence-limiting workflow, or want its documented masking and diagnostic controls.
- Start with Blender’s tools if your work is mostly manual painting, gradients, sampling and smoothing, and you do not need the additional transfer or rig-cleanup workflow.
- Check the specific rig case if you expect automatic remapping. The vendor specifically notes that Auto-Rig Pro weights are detected but not automatically remapped.
WeightForge is a digital add-on rather than a physical product.
