The charge is a cricket disciplinary matter under Professional Conduct Regulation 3.2—not a criminal assault charge. Derbyshire Police closed its separate reported assault investigation with no further action in September; the Cricket Discipline Panel’s decision was still pending on 3 October.
What is Brydon Carse charged with?
The Cricket Regulator charged Carse with breaching Regulation 3.2 of the ECB Professional Conduct Regulations. The regulator said the charge relates to events in Derby in the early hours of 23 August 2026 and referred the matter to the independent Cricket Discipline Panel for adjudication. Sky News reported the charge on 2 October; Sky Sports published the rule wording and the ECB’s response the same day.
Regulation 3.2 bars a participant from conduct, acts or omissions that are improper, prejudicial to cricket’s interests, or may bring the ECB, cricket or a cricketer or group of cricketers into disrepute. A charge alleges a breach; it is not a finding that one occurred. The ECB said Carse has an opportunity to respond through the established process and that it would not be appropriate to prejudge the outcome.
Is this an assault charge?
No. The Cricket Regulator’s charge is under cricket’s conduct rules, not a criminal assault charge. Derbyshire Police had separately investigated a reported assault in Derby city centre, but closed that investigation with no further action in September. That police outcome does not decide the ECB disciplinary case, which was still awaiting adjudication as of 3 October.

Earlier reporting said Carse’s role, if any, in the alleged assault was unclear. The available reports do not establish that he assaulted anyone. Al Jazeera’s 18 September report, citing Agence France-Presse, quoted police confirming the investigation’s closure.
What happened in Derby?
Reports said Carse was celebrating with Durham teammates at Molly Malones on the Wardwick in the early hours of 23 August. Police statements reproduced in reporting said officers attended the venue and a man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly, then de-arrested after officers took his details. Reporting also said Carse agreed to leave. An arrest on suspicion is not a finding of guilt, and the reported police action should not be mistaken for the Cricket Regulator’s later charge.

How did the case develop?
- 23 August 2026: Police attended Molly Malones in Derby after the reported incident. The events later became the subject of a cricket-regulatory charge.
- 24–26 August: England removed Carse from the squad for the second Test against Pakistan. Derbyshire Police confirmed an assault investigation; reports said no arrests had been made at that stage and that Carse’s role, if any, was unclear.
- 18 September: Derbyshire Police closed the reported assault investigation with no further action.
- 2 October: The Cricket Regulator charged Carse under Regulation 3.2 and referred the matter to the independent Cricket Discipline Panel.
What happens next?
The Cricket Discipline Panel is to adjudicate the regulatory case. As of 3 October 2026, no panel finding or sanction had been reported. The regulator said the process was ongoing and it would make no further comment. Until adjudication, the charge remains an allegation rather than a proven breach.

Sky News reported that Carse was dropped from England’s second and third Tests against Pakistan and omitted from a limited-overs squad. Those are reported selection decisions, not a final disciplinary penalty. The available reporting does not establish a definitive reason for each omission, so they should not be presented as a sanction imposed by the Cricket Discipline Panel.
