Dan Carter’s World Cup Advice to the Wallabies: Believe, but Learn From 2023

Dan Carter’s reported advice to the Wallabies ahead of the 2027 men’s Rugby World Cup is to believe in the squad’s ability without brushing aside what went wrong in 2023. The former All Blacks fly-half points to New Zealand’s response to its 2007 quarter-final defeat as a useful example—not a guarantee of future success. Australia will host the next tournament, bringing the lift of home support and the pressure of expectation together.

What Carter says the Wallabies should take from 2023

Carter’s message has two parts: trust the players available, and examine the previous World Cup honestly. In comments reproduced by a search result attributing them to the Sydney Morning Herald—the original article was not directly verified—he said the Wallabies have players capable of believing they can beat any team.

“Confidence and belief are similar things, and you’ve just got to embrace the challenge, but then to be able to look around the room and eyeball your teammates and actually genuinely believe you can beat anyone in the world – and they [the Wallabies] have got the players to be able to do that.”

But confidence, in Carter’s view, should not mean forgetting the 2023 campaign. He urged players who experienced it to identify what went wrong and carry those lessons forward. That is advice from a former player, not proof that reviewing a campaign guarantees a better result.

“And then also just take the lessons. There’s enough players in that squad that have gone through the hard times as well, and as long as you’re learning from those challenging moments, it can often make you stronger. So, 2023, you shouldn’t just sort of brush that off; you should actually learn what went wrong from the players that were there.”

Why Carter points to the All Blacks’ 2007 defeat

New Zealand lost 20–18 to France in the 2007 Rugby World Cup quarter-final. Carter’s reported comparison is about what followed: the team looked back at earlier World Cups and examined where it had fallen short, rather than treating the quarter-final exit as something to simply put behind it.

The subsequent results were striking, though they do not establish a simple formula. New Zealand beat France 8–7 in the 2011 final and won the 2015 tournament. World Rugby’s historical records confirm those results. The analogy supports Carter’s case for learning from a painful defeat; it does not mean that repeating New Zealand’s review process would ensure Australia wins a future tournament.

How a home World Cup can help—and weigh on a team

Australia is the host of the 2027 men’s Rugby World Cup, confirmed by World Rugby. Playing at home can bring supporters close to the team and create energy, but attention and expectation can also make the occasion feel heavier.

Former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw captured both sides in the comments reproduced in the attributed newspaper report: “It can be helpful, definitely, but it can also be a burden.” That tension is not unique to Australia. In a separate 2023 interview, World Rugby spoke with McCaw about managing expectations when New Zealand hosted the 2011 tournament. He also reflected on how the pain of the 2007 loss helped lay a platform for the later win.

The practical lesson for the Wallabies

Carter’s advice is not to choose between optimism and accountability. The squad can approach 2027 believing it has the players to compete, while also asking those who were part of the 2023 campaign to be specific about what needs to change. The All Blacks’ history offers an example of responding to failure; the work of applying that lesson belongs to the Wallabies.
