A Sept. 29 report said voters in Antrim and Presque Isle counties were still waiting; it did not establish that every Michigan voter was affected or confirm those counties’ later status. If you are waiting for your ballot, check its record with the state tracker and contact your local clerk.
What Michigan’s absentee-ballot deadline means
Michigan’s 2026 election calendar set Sept. 24 as the date absentee ballots had to be “available for issuance to voters.” The state’s calendar lists that date for the Nov. 3 general election: Michigan Department of State election calendar. Votebeat described it as the statutory 40-day deadline to send ballots, but availability for issuance does not mean every voter must physically have a ballot in the mailbox that day. The process includes printing, delivery to municipal clerks, and mailing to voters.
Hayley Harding’s Sept. 29, 2026, Votebeat report said Antrim and Presque Isle counties’ voters were still waiting, with local officials confirming delays. It also reported that Waterford Township and Grayling mailed ballots on Sept. 25. Farmington Hills, Commerce Township, Chocolay Township, and Klacking Township had ballots available for pickup by Sept. 24 but began mailing them later that week. These reports describe delays in named jurisdictions, not a statewide failure. Votebeat’s Sept. 29 report did not verify whether all delayed voters later received ballots.
Why some ballots were delayed
Officials and the report pointed to a tight stretch between the August primary and November general election: primary results had to be finalized before general-election ballots could be prepared, while a limited number of approved printers faced a concentrated rush of final orders.

Antrim County Deputy Clerk Annette Marcus said the county finalized primary results about a week before she prepared to send ballots to the printer. “I don’t know how, honestly, to get it out any faster,” she said. Grand Traverse County Clerk Sam Gedman described the rush even where ballots went out on time: “Everybody works real hard to make it happen, and it’s just a hurry. We always rush, no matter how prepared we are, and it’s frustrating, but that’s just part of the gig, I guess.” He called timely ballot delivery “a commitment we make to the voters.” Votebeat
Jennifer Morrell, CEO and co-founder of The Elections Group and a former elections official in Colorado and Utah, said a production plan can help officials assign tasks and deadlines, spot vendor overpromising, and identify internal inefficiencies. She recommended asking what tasks are being done, who is responsible, and by what date. That is expert advice on planning, not proof that missing plans caused the specific delays in Michigan.

A separate reprinting issue in Hamlin Township
Hamlin Township’s delay had a distinct explanation: ballots were being reprinted after a trustee facing recall died. A township notice said the reprinted ballots would be mailed starting Oct. 1. This was a separate case, not evidence that the broader delays arose from the same cause. Votebeat
How to check whether your ballot was sent
- Check Michigan’s ballot tracker. The official Michigan Voter Information Center can show when your clerk sent an absentee ballot and whether the clerk received your completed ballot. You can also sign up for email notifications. The state cautions that an in-person return may not appear as “received” in the tracker.
- Contact your city or township clerk. The local clerk is the right contact for questions about whether your ballot was mailed or received. Use the state’s official election information service to find local information.
The tracker records an individual voter’s ballot; it is not a countywide delivery-status report. The Sept. 29 account is the latest verified county-level information here for Antrim and Presque Isle, so ask your clerk for a current update if you live there.

How to return a completed ballot on time
Michigan lists several ways to return a completed absentee ballot: prepaid mail, a secure local drop box, the clerk’s office, an early-voting site, or—in most places—direct tabulation at your Election Day polling place. Detroit voters cannot tabulate an absentee ballot at a Detroit polling place on Election Day; they may return it to a drop box or clerk’s office. Compare options by how much control and travel they require: handing a ballot to a clerk or using an official drop box avoids mail transit, while mail requires enough time for delivery. No method is universally best for every voter. Michigan absentee voting instructions
For a regular absentee ballot to count, it must reach the local clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3, 2026. A postmark by Election Day alone does not preserve a regular ballot for counting. The state recommends mailing at least two weeks before Election Day and says mailing within 14 days is not recommended; a drop-box ballot also must be deposited by 8 p.m. on Election Day. A separate six-day receipt provision applies to military and overseas ballots postmarked on or before Election Day. Michigan absentee voting instructions

Can you vote in person if your absentee ballot has not arrived?
Yes. If you have an absentee ballot but have not returned it, Michigan says you may vote in person during early voting or on Election Day. You can submit your absentee ballot there or spoil it and receive a new ballot. Once you cast a ballot at an in-person location, you cannot cast another. The 2026 mandatory early-voting period begins Oct. 24; check official election resources for your local site and hours before traveling. What the reported numbers do—and do not—show
Votebeat reported that more than 1.9 million Michigan voters were on the state’s permanent mail ballot list. That is a statewide list-size figure, not a count of people whose ballots were delayed. The Sept. 29 report documented missed or late mailings in several named jurisdictions; it did not establish how many voters were affected statewide. Votebeat

The report said state officials described missed deadlines as not unheard of and said there is typically no penalty when a county has a plan to get ballots to voters as soon as possible. That is the report’s account of officials’ characterization, not a complete analysis of possible legal consequences.
