The timber stations—designed as elevated garden beds or sandpits—are being tailored to each child’s seated or supported standing height. A public build is scheduled for October 18, 2026, outside RAC Arena during the Telethon Family Festival.
What the Telethon project includes
The initiative is for 10 individually built play stations, not a standard playground installation. The West Australian reports that each timber bed can be used for planting or as a sandpit, with the arrangement intended to suit a particular child’s needs. The report does not give dimensions, a materials list, or technical specifications for the stations. The West Australian’s report
Why height and approach matter
For a child who uses a wheelchair, walker or standing frame, an activity placed at ground level may be difficult to reach or join. A raised surface can bring planting or sand play closer, but its usefulness depends on the child’s posture, reach and ability to approach the station.
Build Now Foundation managing director Stephen Mansfield said the team measured each child in their wheelchair or support equipment so the beds could be fitted to their sitting or standing height. He described the aim as creating beds children can wheel up to and use to touch, feel and explore while supported. The report does not publish the resulting heights or a common design specification; the point of the project is individual fitting. The West Australian’s report

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What families say about everyday outdoor play
The family accounts in the report describe practical barriers rather than measured project outcomes. Caity Rawlings, Alecia’s mother, said play can become exclusionary when an activity is out of reach from a wheelchair or cannot be adjusted to a child’s height. Luca’s mother described soft sand as difficult to navigate with a walker. Rawlings called the prospect of a tailored space “honestly life-changing”; that is her expectation, not an independently evaluated outcome.

What to consider when planning a home play station
The project’s individualized approach offers a useful starting point for families considering a raised garden or play surface at home. An off-the-shelf raised bed is not automatically wheelchair-accessible: a comfortable height alone does not guarantee that a child can get close enough or reach the play area.
- Match the surface to posture: consider the child’s seated or supported standing position and usable reach.
- Check the approach: allow the wheelchair, walker or standing frame to reach the station without an obstructed route.
- Consider reach and clearance: look at how far the child must reach into the bed and whether the edge and supports leave room to get close.
- Choose the activity: decide whether the surface is for planting, sand play or both.
- Plan with the child and family: involve relevant therapy or access professionals when checking whether the design suits the child.
These are practical considerations, not published dimensions or technical standards for the Telethon builds.

Build Now Foundation’s related accessibility work
Build Now Foundation’s project pages describe other accessible home and outdoor work. Its Palmer’s Garden profile describes a garden intended to be usable from a wheelchair or walking frame and notes that the child receives physiotherapy through Healthy Strides. That example provides context for the organizations’ work, but it does not establish that the Telethon stations use the same design or that Healthy Strides provides a particular referral service.
