The gathering also highlighted the developing partnership between Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation (DAC) and Crestlink, whose proposed logistics hub remains a future development rather than an operating facility.
A gathering centred on family and Country
DAC says the gathering took place on Wednesday 30 September 2026 at Umbagaramba / Balanyoo, also known as Cockatoo Island. It brought families together to recognise Country, culture and continuing connections between generations. National Indigenous Times reported on the event on 1 October 2026.
DAC Chair Gary Umbagai described the importance of the return in terms of connection across generations: “For us, getting back on Country is what is important. Our old people were connected to these islands and looked after Country, and we want our younger ones and our families to have that same connection.”
DAC identifies Cockatoo Island as part of Oomeday country. In its account, Umbagaramba / Balanyoo is culturally connected with Godanoo (Koolan), Wanganiyn (Irvine), and Garaan-ngaddim (Horizontal Falls) through the Woongudd story. These relationships are described by DAC and are central to the cultural context of the gathering.

What the partnership means
The event also marked the relationship formalised by a 2024 Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) between DAC and Crestlink. DAC says the agreement established a framework for their work together. It also says Crestlink’s 2026 involvement in the future of Koolan Island expanded opportunities for DAC participation in decisions and opportunities across both islands.
Crestlink CEO and co-founder Eanna Doolin called the agreement “an important foundation for our relationship with Dambimangari” and said the company was proud of the partnership built with DAC and Dambeemangaddee people since it was executed. Doolin also said Crestlink’s commitment is to work cooperatively with Traditional Owners and ensure Dambeemangaddee people have a meaningful role in Umbagaramba / Balanyoo’s future.

What Crestlink says is planned for Cockatoo Island
Crestlink describes an intended integrated aviation and marine logistics capability to serve offshore energy, government and defence-related operations. Its project page says the island has an existing 1,060-metre aerodrome that the company describes as CASA-compliant, and Crown Lease tenure. The stated aerodrome length is a company-reported figure, not an independently verified measurement.
Crestlink’s milestone list reports final environmental approval in December 2025 and execution of the Crown Lease in January 2026. The company presents these as enabling a pathway for future aerodrome, port and supporting infrastructure development. They do not establish that the proposed logistics hub has been built or is operating.

What remains unclear about the development
The available project information does not give a detailed construction schedule, a complete scope of works or a specific next milestone. Nor does it establish when construction might begin. Crestlink’s stated approvals and development pathway should therefore be distinguished from completed infrastructure and demonstrated project outcomes.
For DAC, the gathering’s purpose is not reducible to the project: it is about family, culture and reconnection with Country. Umbagai said he wants young people to know their Country and “to see a future for themselves here – looking after and working on Country and building their own businesses here.”

Traditional Owner priorities and the next steps
DAC’s Healthy Country Plan 2023–2032 sets priorities for DAC and Dambimangari Rangers. DAC asks partners to recognise and support the plan. It offers a Traditional Owner-led frame for considering how proposed development should relate to caring for Country and the community’s priorities.
The key distinction is between the cultural gathering and the proposed infrastructure: families have returned for a gathering grounded in connection to Country, while the logistics hub remains a company-described future pathway. How the partnership develops, what infrastructure is ultimately delivered and how it aligns with DAC’s priorities are matters for future decisions and reporting.
