Blizzard cut the bonus experience attached to dungeon quests by 50% in the WoW: Forever beta’s October 1, 2026 update—not the entire quest reward. In the reported Wailing Caverns example, the Deviate Hides turn-in still granted 3,100 XP after the change, according to PC Gamer.
What Blizzard changed in the October 1 beta update
Blizzard’s October 1, 2026 development notes say: “Dungeon quests now reward 50% less extra experience beyond normal quest values.” The notes also say the change followed ongoing discussions about leveling speed. Read Blizzard’s beta notes.
The key distinction is between a quest’s normal value and the extra beta experience layered on top of it. Blizzard reduced that extra portion; its note does not say that every dungeon quest’s total reward is now half what it was.
How the Deviate Hides example works
Harvey Randall’s PC Gamer report uses the Wailing Caverns quest “Deviate Hides” to illustrate the difference. It gives the Classic reward as 1,600 XP and the pre-change Forever beta reward as about 4,650 XP. That implies about 3,050 XP of extra experience above the Classic value.

| Deviate Hides figure | XP | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Classic reward | 1,600 | The normal-value baseline cited in PC Gamer’s report. |
| Before the change | About 4,650 | The reported beta reward, including about 3,050 XP above the baseline. |
| After the 50% bonus reduction | About 3,125 by calculation | 1,600 baseline plus half of the approximately 3,050 XP bonus. |
| Reported post-change turn-in | 3,100 | Randall says this was the amount yielded that morning; the report suggests rounding may account for the roughly 25 XP difference from the calculation. |
PC Gamer’s report presents the 3,100 XP as the journalist’s observed turn-in. It is a single example, not proof that every dungeon quest follows the same numbers.
Are dungeon quests still worth doing?
The example shows that a dungeon quest can remain a substantial reward after the bonus is reduced: the reported Deviate Hides turn-in was still nearly twice its stated Classic value. That supports doing the quest when it fits a Wailing Caverns run, but it does not establish the best leveling route for every character, dungeon quest, or play style.

PC Gamer interprets the tuning as making dungeon runs worthwhile for completing their quests once or twice, while encouraging players to continue leveling in the open world afterward. That is the outlet’s reading of the change, not a separate promise in Blizzard’s notes.

The change belongs to the October 1 beta update, which also raised the level cap to 30 and added Excavation Site: Wetlands (26–31). Blizzard described leveling-speed discussions as ongoing and said the XP adjustment applied “with this release.” The official note therefore establishes the beta change, not a finalized live-game formula; beta values may still change.
