For most creators building a study-with-me scene, start with OBS Studio. Its visual workflow brings scene composition, encoding, recording, and streaming together. Choose FFmpeg when you need a scripted media pipeline, custom protocol handling, or a relay—and are prepared to configure and supervise it. Neither tool alone guarantees a 24/7 stream: continuity depends on the computer or server, network, power, destination platform, and tested recovery plan.
OBS and FFmpeg solve different problems

OBS describes itself as software for “capturing, compositing, encoding, recording, and streaming video content, efficiently.” OBS Project. The practical distinction is not that one program is universally more stable: the available sources establish no reliability benchmark that proves OBS or FFmpeg wins for 24/7 study streams.
Which one should you choose?
Choose OBS if you are producing the study scene
OBS is the straightforward starting point if you want to arrange a desk view, timer, background, text, and audio sources, then manage them visually. You can begin without writing a command-line pipeline. Keep the scene lean while you establish a stable baseline; every additional source or effect can change the load on the host.
Choose FFmpeg if the pipeline itself is the project
FFmpeg is worth exploring when you already understand media inputs and outputs, need custom protocol handling, or want automation that a graphical workflow does not provide. The OBS project wiki documents one example: relaying an SRT input to an RTMP-compatible service. That is a specific relay use, not evidence that FFmpeg is a simpler replacement for OBS when composing a scene.

Use both only when the extra layer earns its keep
An advanced setup can use OBS to produce the scene and FFmpeg on a separate host to relay it. The relay introduces another service and connection to operate. In the wiki’s described approach, bandwidth use can be about twice the video stream bandwidth, and a reliable server connection is required; the wiki cautions that this may be expensive with some providers. Treat that figure as specific to its described approach, not a universal relay cost. OBS Project wiki.
Set up a study stream in OBS and test it under real conditions
- Open the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, use Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard to establish starting settings. OBS’s help portal recommends the wizard for basic configuration and points to its x264 guide for more detailed encoding choices. OBS Help Portal.
- Build a simple scene. Add only the sources your format needs, such as a camera view, background, timer, or music source. Test the complete scene rather than assuming that an otherwise compatible computer can sustain it.
- Pick resolution and frame rate by testing. There is no universal setting in the available guidance: the target platform and network are unspecified, and OBS says performance varies with resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. For a mostly static study scene, 30 fps is a sensible starting point to test, not an official requirement. OBS notes that 60 fps can be much more demanding than 30 fps. OBS Help Portal.
- Use the destination platform’s current stream settings. Set the stream service and key in OBS using the current instructions from your chosen platform. Do not treat bitrate, ingest, or session settings as interchangeable across destinations; the available sources do not establish current requirements for a specific platform.
- Run a sustained test with the intended scene and connection. Watch system load and whether the stream remains healthy while the actual sources are active. OBS warns that its basic system requirements do not guarantee adequate streaming or recording performance. OBS system requirements.
- Add local recording only if you need it. In Advanced Output mode, OBS lets you configure streaming and recording separately. If both use software encoding at different quality settings, recording adds CPU work; test them together and check available storage before relying on that arrangement. Plan recovery as part of the 24/7 setup
Automatic reconnect helps with some interruptions, but an always-on stream is an operations problem as well as an encoder choice. Decide what should happen after a temporary internet drop, encoder crash, operating-system update, or power loss. Configure the reconnect or restart behavior available in your chosen setup, then test it with the destination platform you actually intend to use. OBS documents automatic reconnect configuration, but its behavior does not establish that every failure or platform session will recover automatically. OBS Help Portal.

- Check whether the host stays powered and connected for the periods you need.
- Observe CPU/GPU load and storage during the full scene, especially if you record at the same time.
- Test an interruption and confirm what viewers see and what action is needed to resume.
- Keep the destination platform’s current ingest and broadcast-session requirements handy; they can determine whether a reconnect resumes the same broadcast or needs additional action.
When a relay is—and is not—worth adding
A relay is not a beginner requirement for an OBS study stream. Consider it only when your workflow needs the protocol conversion, network placement, or other custom handling it provides. The OBS project’s SRT/RIST guide shows an FFmpeg relay example and warns that it requires a reliable server connection and can consume substantial bandwidth. A relay does not remove the need to monitor the source, relay, destination, and recovery behavior. OBS Project wiki.
