First check whether the picture is black in OBS’s preview or only on YouTube. A black preview usually points to a hidden or misconfigured capture source; a correct preview with a black or buffering live broadcast calls for checking stream output and connection instead. The right fix depends on your source type, operating system, OBS version, and—on some Windows laptops—GPU setup.
1. Find where the picture disappears
- Check the OBS preview. If it is black, inspect the source’s visibility, source type, and capture configuration. Confirm that the source is enabled in the active scene and is not obscured by another source.
- If the preview looks right, check the live output. Verify that OBS is streaming and inspect playback at the destination. Black video or buffering on the audience side is not the same problem as a black capture preview.
- Identify the exact source and environment. Note whether you use Display Capture, Window Capture, or Game Capture, plus your operating system and OBS version. On a Windows laptop, also check whether it has integrated and discrete GPUs.
OBS distinguishes capture-source problems from dropped frames and intermittent disconnections, which point to the connection between the computer and the streaming ingest server. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide covers that separate branch.
2. Match the fix to the capture source
Display or window capture
Use Display Capture when you need the desktop, or Window Capture for an individual application window. OBS’s quick-start guide identifies those sources for desktop or single-window capture on Windows and Linux; macOS uses a Screen Capture source. Check that the intended display or window is selected and that it is visible and available while the scene is active.
Game Capture
Game Capture is a Windows-only source in OBS’s quick-start material. Make sure the scene uses the source intended for the game rather than changing settings for an unrelated display or window source. If the game is not captured, check the source and its configuration before treating the symptom as a network problem.

See the OBS Quick Start Guide for the source types and setup overview. The available guidance does not identify a universal black-screen cause, so avoid assuming that one capture method or setting will fix every system.
3. Check GPU assignment on a multi-GPU Windows laptop
On some laptops, OBS and the captured application can run on different GPUs, affecting capture or performance. OBS’s GPU Selection Guide gives different GPU recommendations depending on whether you use Game or Window Capture versus Display Capture; its laptop troubleshooting guide recommends leaving OBS on the default high-power GPU in the cases it describes. Do not apply one GPU choice to every source type.

- Use OBS’s GPU Selection Guide to find the recommendation for your capture source and Windows configuration.
- Follow the current Windows settings path for your system to assign the GPU, then restart OBS if Windows or the guide requires it.
- Reopen the scene and check the preview before testing the live output.
For laptop-specific context, consult OBS Laptop Troubleshooting. Its published guidance is version- and configuration-dependent; do not assume it has been revalidated for every later Windows build.
4. Try the documented Windows display-capture method
This step is specifically for Display Capture on Windows—not macOS, Linux, or Game Capture. OBS’s laptop guide describes the newer display-capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or higher with OBS 27 or higher. If the source’s capture method is set to Automatic and fails, OBS suggests manually trying “Windows 10.”

- Open the affected Display Capture source’s properties.
- Find Capture Method and, if it is set to Automatic, select Windows 10.
- Apply the change and check whether the preview returns.
If those labels are absent or the instructions do not match your system, check the current OBS laptop troubleshooting page rather than applying this version-specific advice to another platform.
5. Tell a black source apart from overload or connection trouble
Preview is black
Keep troubleshooting the capture path: source visibility, source type, GPU assignment where relevant, and the documented capture method for your Windows version. Reducing output resolution or frame rate is not a guaranteed fix for a source that is already black in preview.

Preview works, but output is choppy or encoding struggles
Rendering and encoding can struggle when GPU resources are overloaded. OBS recommends reducing load—for example, simplifying scenes or lowering output resolution or frame rate where needed. These changes address performance problems, not necessarily capture-source failure. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections
Those symptoms indicate an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain, according to OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting. Test the network separately from the capture source; OBS lists wired networking as one connection troubleshooting step. A network change is not a remedy for a black preview.

6. Validate the setup before leaving a study stream unattended
- Start the actual scene and confirm that the intended source is visible in the OBS preview.
- Test the live destination and verify that viewers can see the picture, not just that the preview is correct.
- Watch OBS’s status indicators during a test. OBS recommends testing settings for a few minutes before relying on them; for an unattended 24/7 use case, a longer validation period is a prudent extra check, not a guaranteed uptime test.
- After any change to capture method, GPU assignment, scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, or network, repeat the checks that correspond to the problem you were solving.
No configuration described here guarantees uninterrupted streaming. OBS’s Quick Start Guide and System Requirements provide further setup context; operating-system and OBS interfaces may change.
Or let it run in the cloud
