To make one lecture repeat in OBS, enable Loop in the Media Source properties. To repeat several lectures in order, use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled. These settings loop what plays in the scene; they do not guarantee that the live broadcast itself stays connected if OBS, your computer, power, or network fails.
Loop one lecture file in OBS
- Add or select a Media Source in your OBS scene.
- Open the source’s properties and enable Loop. OBS documents this option as repeating the file when playback completes. OBS Project’s Media Sources guide (dated January 11, 2022) describes the setting.
- Leave Restart playback when source becomes active enabled if you want the file to start from the beginning whenever the source becomes active. OBS lists this option as enabled by default.
- Choose whether to enable Show nothing when playback ends. It hides the source when a file ends; with Loop enabled, ordinary playback should repeat instead of reaching that final end state.
Loop a sequence of lectures
Use this when several recordings should play one after another, then return to the first.
- Add a VLC Video source and add the lecture files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist. OBS describes it as: “Specifies whether the source should restart when it has run out of media files.” OBS lists it as enabled by default.
- Keep Shuffle Playlist off if the lectures need to play in a fixed order. OBS lists shuffle as off by default.
- Install VLC if the VLC Video source is unavailable. Match the architecture: OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Check what happens when the source is hidden
A scene change can hide a VLC Video source. Its Visibility Behaviour setting controls whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while the source is hidden. OBS documents the default as Stop when not visible, restart when visible. If the lecture must continue advancing while another scene is shown, review this setting and choose the behavior that fits your scene design. OBS’s Media Sources guide explains the control.
Media looping is not broadcast recovery
The OBS loop controls repeat a local file or playlist inside the scene. They do not, by themselves, keep a live broadcast connected if OBS or the encoder stops, the computer loses power, or the network fails. The documentation cited here does not establish reconnect behavior or an uptime guarantee for a particular streaming platform and setup.

Do not confuse the source setting with YouTube’s viewer-side repeat control. YouTube’s Loop videos or playlists on YouTube instructions describe repeating a video or playlist for playback on YouTube, not looping the source sent by OBS.
YouTube’s HLS setup guide covers ingestion details such as segment format, rolling playlist limits, HTTPS requests, and supported codecs. It notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because video is sent in segments; these ingestion settings are not a fix for a source reaching the end of its file.
