How to Stream Recorded University Lectures 24/7 on YouTube

A practical guide to looping prerecorded university lectures on YouTube Live, including encoder setup, archive limits, rights clearance, and cloud streaming.

You can stream recorded lectures around the clock on YouTube by sending a prerecorded video or playlist through a live-stream encoder. For a do-it-yourself setup, prepare an authorized lecture playlist, connect an encoder to a YouTube stream key, and test the full broadcast before relying on it. One important limit: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as replays, so a 24/7 broadcast should not be your only archive.

What you need for a 24/7 lecture stream

A YouTube Live stream is a video feed sent by an encoder. The feed can come from prerecorded lectures rather than a live camera, but something must keep sending it: a computer running encoder software, dedicated encoder hardware, or a cloud service. YouTube describes software and hardware encoders as options and maintains a list of verified encoder products; those products are not made by YouTube.

  • A YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s eligibility guidance requires the channel to be verified and to have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • Lecture recordings and any playlist order you want the stream to follow.
  • An encoder and a reliable internet connection if you run the encoder locally.
  • Permission to rebroadcast the recordings and the materials included in them.
  • A separate local recording or archive plan if you need complete, retrievable copies.

For a local encoder, YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity 20% above the bitrate you intend to send and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream. Actual bitrate needs depend on your chosen stream settings and network conditions.

Set up the stream with a local encoder

  1. Check channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, confirm the channel is verified and can go live. If you have never livestreamed before, allow up to 24 hours for activation. A channel with a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days does not meet YouTube’s stated eligibility condition.
  2. Prepare the lecture files and playlist. Check that every file plays from beginning to end, has intelligible audio, and is in the intended order. Test any transitions or repeated playback in the encoder before launch. Keep original recordings locally if you need a dependable archive; an external SSD is one optional storage choice, not a YouTube requirement.
  3. Create or schedule a stream. Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP settings, as applicable. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  4. Configure and start the encoder. Select the lecture file or playlist, configure the stream destination with the copied URL and key, then start sending the feed. Exact labels and settings differ by encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance distinguishes starting the encoder from starting the public broadcast; inspect the YouTube preview and use the applicable Studio controls to take the stream live.
  5. Run a full test before leaving it unattended. Check picture, audio, playlist order and repeat behavior, playback on the devices your audience is likely to use, network stability, and local recording. Test recovery after a deliberate interruption while the stream is private or otherwise not public, if your setup allows it.
  6. Monitor the live event. Check YouTube Studio for stream health, audio or video problems, copyright notices, and other alerts. A 24/7 stream is not self-monitoring: local power, internet, encoder, or rights issues can interrupt it.

Plan for replays separately from continuous streaming

YouTube’s archive guidance says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, “it may not be captured at all.” Therefore, do not assume a continuous 24/7 event will produce a complete replay.

If students need recordings they can revisit, retain local copies and plan the archive independently of the live broadcast. You could schedule shorter events and preserve the source files, but shorter sessions are an operational choice, not a guarantee of archive behavior. Consider how viewers will find a specific lecture, whether they need uninterrupted viewing, and who will maintain the local archive.

Clear rights before rebroadcasting lectures

Confirm that the university or channel operator has permission to livestream each recording and all content inside it. Review slides, embedded clips, music, images, guest contributions, and participant likenesses as applicable. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to represent and warrant that it has the necessary rights for the live content and to comply with applicable laws and regulations.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies protected material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A rights holder may need to add a licensed channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone may not prevent an interruption. Resolve licensing and allowlisting with the rights holder before the broadcast, and monitor for notices while live.

Educational purpose does not automatically make a rebroadcast lawful. YouTube’s fair-use guidance explains that U.S. fair use is fact-specific and that courts ultimately decide individual cases; copyright exceptions also vary by region. Ask the institution’s rights office or qualified counsel about the relevant jurisdiction and materials rather than assuming an educational stream is exempt.

Account for monetization rules

YouTube’s monetization policy update dated July 15, 2025 renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and says repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible for monetization under the existing policy. A continuous loop of lectures may warrant review under that policy, but the policy statement does not decide every university lecture scenario. Do not assume that educational subject matter or live delivery makes a stream eligible for monetization.

Troubleshoot common interruptions

  • You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, live-stream eligibility, and whether first-time activation is still pending. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube shows no incoming signal: Confirm the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key match the event. If you regenerate a key, update the encoder too. Keep the key private.
  • The stream buffers or drops: Check encoder and network stability, then compare available upload capacity with the configured bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; local power and internet failures can still stop a local encoder.
  • The broadcast is live but the replay is missing or incomplete: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use local recordings and a separate archive plan rather than relying on the live event to preserve the lectures.
  • The stream is interrupted by a copyright notice: Identify the flagged material and contact the relevant rights holder. Confirm licensing and any required Content ID allowlisting before restarting; a license by itself may not prevent interruption.
  • Audio, video, or playlist playback fails: Test each source file, its audio, and the playlist behavior in advance, then inspect the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators while live.
