Disney announced a $1.5 billion equity investment in Epic Games in 2024, not a purchase of the company. A 2026 report quotes Disney executive Dana Walden referring to “very serious questions about an investment and an equity stake,” but that wording does not establish that Disney considered or could have completed an outright acquisition.
What Disney and Epic announced in 2024
On February 7, 2024, Disney announced a $1.5 billion investment to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games, alongside a multiyear collaboration. Disney’s announcement described an investment and partnership; it did not say Disney was buying all of Epic or disclose a specific ownership percentage. The transaction was subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Disney’s announcement

The planned collaboration was an open, persistent social games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite. Disney said users would be able to play, watch, shop, engage with stories and characters, and create and share experiences. The announcement named Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar, and said the experience would be powered by Unreal Engine and interoperate with Fortnite. These were announced plans, not proof that every feature has launched.
Disney reported that Fortnite had more than 100 million active players and creators. It also cited more than 15.3 million concurrent players during Fortnite’s Marvel Nexus War with Galactus live event. Both figures are Disney’s figures from the February 2024 announcement, not independent measurements.

What the 2026 “could have bought” report establishes
An October 2, 2026 Gameranx report attributes this remark to Disney CCO and President Dana Walden: “It was pretty obvious that we had very serious questions about an investment and an equity stake. Those are not the conversations we’re having right now. We have a great partnership and a number of launches coming up in the next two years that are going to demonstrate the value of this partnership.” Gameranx’s report
The quote refers to questions about an investment and an equity stake. It does not say Disney could have bought Epic outright, that an acquisition offer was made, or that the companies seriously negotiated a full sale. The report does not include the underlying interview transcript, so the full question and context for Walden’s remarks are not established by the quoted passage.

Why Disney chose an investment and collaboration
On Disney’s February 7, 2024 Q1 FY2024 earnings call, CEO Bob Iger said games mattered because younger audiences spent substantial screen time playing them. He also pointed to Disney characters’ success in Fortnite. His vision was a Disney world connected to Fortnite where people could play and create games, watch, interact and potentially shop. Iger presented the investment as a way to strengthen the partnership while limiting Disney’s risk. Disney’s Q1 FY2024 earnings-call transcript
Iger mentioned physical goods as something that might become possible in the future, not as an existing product line. The announced collaboration’s shopping and engagement ambitions likewise do not establish that project-specific merchandise is available.

Investment versus acquisition: what can be compared
| Question | Announced investment and collaboration | Hypothetical full acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership and control | Disney said it would acquire an equity stake; the announcement did not state a percentage or describe control of Epic. | Not established by the cited sources. |
| Capital committed | Disney announced a $1.5 billion investment for an equity stake. | No proposed price or deal terms are established by the cited sources. |
| Operating and integration risk | Iger described the investment as a way to strengthen the partnership while limiting Disney’s risk. | No source here assesses the risks or feasibility of a full acquisition. |
| Access to Epic and Fortnite | The companies announced a multiyear project connected to Fortnite and powered by Unreal Engine. | No acquisition-specific access or operating arrangement is established. |
| Financial outcome | The announcement disclosed the investment amount, but not a full financial comparison of alternatives. | No credible comparative valuation or outcome is established by the cited sources. |
Epic reported a $28.7 billion valuation after its April 2021 funding round. That is historical context from Epic, not a valuation for the 2024 Disney deal and not evidence of an acquisition offer. Epic’s 2021 funding announcement

- Whether Disney ever considered making an offer to buy all of Epic Games.
- Whether a full acquisition was financially or practically feasible, or what it might have cost.
- What Walden meant by “very serious questions” in the full interview context.
- Whether all the features in the 2024 announced experience have launched.
Disney CEO Robert A. Iger called the partnership “Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of games” in the 2024 announcement. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney described the goal as a “persistent, open and interoperable ecosystem” bringing together Disney and Fortnite communities. Those statements explain the announced ambition; they do not change the transaction from an equity investment into an acquisition.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
