You can send a black video feed with fireplace or candle audio to YouTube using an encoder, but YouTube’s published setup guidance does not specify a black-screen-with-audio recipe or rule on that exact format. Use audio and visuals you have the right to broadcast, test the feed before going live, and don’t rely on YouTube to preserve an uninterrupted 24/7 replay.
What a black-screen ambience stream involves
A YouTube live stream sends video and audio from an encoder to a broadcast created in YouTube Studio. For a black-screen ambience stream, the intended output is a black video image accompanied by candle or fireplace sound. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to connect and configure a stream, but do not document an OBS scene that hides video while retaining audio or say whether this specific format is endorsed. Treat the scene setup as something to verify in your own encoder, not as an official YouTube recipe.
Before broadcasting, preview the incoming stream in YouTube Studio and check the result as a viewer. Confirm that the image is black, the sound is audible at a suitable level, and the feed is not accidentally showing a desktop, controls, or unrelated content. Avoid presenting the stream in a way that misrepresents what viewers will hear or see.
Check eligibility and rights before setup
Enable live streaming
Make sure your channel is eligible to livestream. YouTube says a first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Its requirements include a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s current live streaming eligibility information before planning a start time.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use audio and visuals you can broadcast
You need broadcast rights for the sound and any video or image in the feed. Owning a recording, finding it online, or having a license for personal use does not by itself establish permission to use it in a livestream; check that the license covers livestream or broadcast use. YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder replacing the stream, an interruption, or termination. Even a valid license may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Set up the YouTube broadcast and encoder
- Create or schedule the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, start an encoder-based live stream or schedule one. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup instructions.
- Connect the encoder: Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the corresponding fields in your software or hardware encoder. The key is a credential that allows YouTube to accept the encoder’s feed. Keep it private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Build and test the output: Set up your encoder to send the intended black video and ambience audio. The official YouTube sources do not prescribe the exact scene or audio-routing settings for this. Send a test feed, wait for it to appear in YouTube Studio’s preview, and verify both picture and sound before starting the public broadcast.
- Go live and monitor: Start the broadcast from the encoder and use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to check stream health and status messages. A successful preview is useful, but it does not guarantee the connection will remain stable for hours.
Choose settings your connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as encoder options. For H.264, YouTube recommends an ingestion bitrate of 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain the feed. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current settings and supported combinations.

Choose a bitrate that fits your actual sustained upload capacity, not just a speed-test peak. YouTube’s streaming advice recommends keeping 20% bandwidth headroom. Other people or devices using the connection, Wi-Fi interference, and interruptions from an internet provider can reduce available upload capacity. If stream health shows instability, lower the bitrate or reduce resolution or frame rate, then test again. YouTube’s streaming tips cover connection preparation and monitoring.
Can you leave a fireplace stream running overnight?
Yes, a broadcast can continue while the encoder and its internet connection keep sending a valid feed. With a local-computer setup, the computer, encoder, and network connection must remain running; sleep settings, restarts, outages, or encoder failures can end the feed. Check stream health before leaving it unattended and again when you return. An overnight stream is still subject to YouTube’s content scanning and live-stream enforcement.

Will YouTube save a 24/7 live stream?
Do not count on a complete replay of a continuous 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, while streams that exceed 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, record locally as a backup and consider scheduling separate broadcasts shorter than 12 hours. Check YouTube’s current archive live streams guidance before relying on a particular ending and restart workflow.
Troubleshoot common problems
- No preview appears: Confirm that the encoder is sending to the stream URL and key shown for the correct YouTube broadcast. Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube Studio’s status messages.
- The video is black but the audio is missing: Check the encoder’s audio source, mute state, and audio meters. Send another test feed and verify sound in the YouTube preview or an unlisted test broadcast before using a public stream.
- Audio plays, but the picture is not black: Inspect the encoder’s active scene and output preview. Confirm that the feed contains the intended video output rather than a desktop or another source.
- The stream buffers or drops: Check stream health, reduce bitrate or output demands if needed, and leave the recommended upload headroom. Shared network traffic or a connection interruption can make a previously stable stream unreliable.
- A copyright notice or interruption appears: Check YouTube’s notice and resolve the rights issue with the relevant rights holder. Confirm that your permissions cover livestream use and, where applicable, that the channel has been allowlisted through Content ID.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Use a local recording or shorter broadcasts if preserving the full program matters.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that should keep playing uploaded ambience without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
